Venatus 2 Report post Posted February 8, 2008 changing the back brake pads this morning, noticed a few things under there. what i think is the fuel tank has a huge dent in the bottom, looks like someone decided to jack the car up using the fuel tank... also theres a bit where the exhaust narrows out and gets really thin, anyone elses do this? the cat is also really long compared to other cars ive seen, whats up with that? bravo 35 Report post Posted February 8, 2008 That is the standard cat for your car. And yep, BMW factory exhaust narrows to give more clearance past the rear subframe. The dent is in the fuel tank. As long as there is no rust, and the metal has not cracked, then it should pass a WOF OK. If you want to you may be able to beat it out using a clean piece of wood from the top as there is a hole above there where the fuel pump or guage sender is (under the rear seat). But you'll probably just make it worse.
will 169 Report post Posted February 8, 2008 I would remove the base of the rear seat, remove the cover above the tank that is under the seat, and check that you dont have a leak as a result of that tank damage. I bought a car a while ago that had similar damage to the tank, I then went and filled the car up and had fuel pouring out everywhere. The dent underneath had pushed hard against the fuel pump assembly and forced it upwards where it stuffed the seal at the top of the tank by buckling it badly. Also damaged the plastic filter at the base of the pickup/pump assembly. I had to remove the fuel pump assembly and attack it with a bit of timber to push the bottom down so i could get the whole pump assembly to seal at the top of the tank again. bravo 35 Report post Posted February 8, 2008 Yup. Same thing happened to me which is why I know about the wood trick. I had fuel pouring out over my exhaust and tyres and had a wee spin at a roundabout. Not fun.
Venatus 2 Report post Posted February 8, 2008 lol dammit well i guess luckily there hasnt been any fuel leaking that ive noticed. do you reckon it could cause erratic fuel gauge behaviour, i cant describe it but it seems kinda weird sometimes
