Recommended Posts

the lights behind the odometer no longer light up on the e36, i assume it just has a bulb behind it to light it up?...any special way the cluster needs to come out?????...or is it still round about the same as a dirty e30?

Just did an E36 compact today at work - two torx screws at the top, needed to remove steering wheel to get dash cluster out.

Bulb holder is a beige one - need to replace the whole thing with one the same

I've removed instrument clusters from a compact, coupe and sedan - none required taking the steering wheel off, you just need to wiggle it out carefully but forcefully...

I replaced the entire unit (bulb and holder) in the past, but I vaguely remember someone mentioning that you could remove the bulb from the holder and replace it with a bulb of the same type available from Repco etc. Anyone know if that's true?

I replaced the bulbs on my dial Climate control and light switch with ones from Supercheap Auto. They're the same bulbs BMW use throughout the car for window switches etc so they're most likely the same in the gauge cluster too.
