Carl 3 Report post Posted June 14, 2008 (edited) Finally got around to fixing my rust problem Was behind the glove box right on the join of the firewall to the wheel arch, water was coming through from the engine bay just below the electrics grommit and pooling on the entire passenger side, was a seriously large amount of water hidden in the carpet foam. Friend was a panel beater for 16 years (is now a sales rep) and owed me for all the work i've done for him so he did the main work, I got the sh*t parts haha. Things I had to get were a mig welder and air compressor (for the tools) from hirepool and a piece of metal which I grabbed an offcut from a panel shop here in P1. For afterwards I grabbed primer and body sealant. Work: Removed dashboard a couple of weeks back as I have a crack free one to install Pulled back as much as of the electrics as I could and tied Sanded back as much as possible and worked out the rusted area Cut a piece of metal to fit the area and banged to fit over the area Traced the metal piece and angle grinded the area Cleaned up all the edges for the welding Mig welded the piece in Cleaned up the welds Sprayed the primer Coated with thick gooey sealant Drank copious amounts of beer Forgot to actually take a starting photo but first one shows the actual rusted piece of the wall Edited June 16, 2008 by Mr. Pink
Mark 178 Report post Posted June 14, 2008 Nice job. When you own an E30 it's good to know people who can fix stuff for a box of coldies!

QuickSilver 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2008 Rust sucks, but thats a good DIY right there, just outta curiosity, how much did the mig welder set you back to hire? What did it come with?
Carl 3 Report post Posted June 15, 2008 (edited) Hired the mig welder @ $54 for 1/2 day (I think the argon gas is charged per usage as well) and that consists of everything you need to weld with plus the helmet. 7.5hp air compressor (which wasn't great) was $56 for 1/2 day as well, didn't have a tube so we made one up for $30 from Power Tools in P1 - awesome boys shop that place. Offcut sheet metal was free Primer and sealant were $25 Cutting blades were $10 The hired stuff was from hirepool and they actually dropped it off and picked it up which was all good. All up < $200 Edited June 15, 2008 by Mr. Pink
