Nikasil Blocks?

Recommended Posts

The e39 article just posted from BMW mag states that e39 engines built prior to feb 98 had the nikasil linings but other sites I've read state that Bmw changed to Alusil in 96 & that the M62 engines are alusil.

I'm not sure I want to know the answer but if anyone knows it would be appreciated.

I saw someone say in one of the other threads that the Nikasil blocks weren't a problem in NZ so maybe you don't even need to know the answer :)

^Hes right, no nikasil problems in NZ.

I think it was an issue with sulphur content in the fuel.

All that unleaded we thought was crap through the 90s was actually doing us a favour.

No problem with Nikasil here.

Westy is correct it was the Sulphur content in the US.

There are zillions of engines running Nikasil or other coated bores without steel liners the problem was very limited to specific treatments and fuels and has become an urban myth. Some manufacturers went away from it and apparently BMW even fitted steel liners for a period of time.

All 3 of my BMW's have the treatment and have around 350,000km between them without a problem.

i also think the k series(if not all) the bmw motorcycles also use this process without issues
