Yes!!! BMW's can explode on start up

Recommended Posts

Yes BMW's can explode on start up. This happened to a customer this morning. Got in the car, tried to start and ...... BANG was lucky that none of the control units went down with it.

Funny, with all that battery damage, the ignition lights still came on...BTW: It was towed into us...not driven

Collapsed plates in one of the cells

The faulty cell boils and creates more gas before it goes bang

My original battery gave up the ghost early this year... it was 14 years old! Lucky it didn't explode!

Holy scheiße!!! Last time I heard of a battery exploding was in a mate's mini back in 1990!

Batteries are actually reasonably dangerous pieces of equipment - they are full of sulfuric acid, generate hydrogen gas and can provide huge currents if shorted. Oh and they hurt when dropped on a foot...

Must have given her one hell of a fright!

Ouch, this is when you DON'T want them inside the car but rather - under the bonnet - imagine if it was like some & mounted under the back seat squab - give the rear seat passenger a wakeup call:o .

Not a common thing to happen, normally as a result of someone shorting it -been there done that

Usually with an internal short they simply self discharge.

Have over the years seen many BMW OEM fitted batteries lasting well over 10 years - a couple up to 15

And YES - they don't do much for the toes when wearing jandels either, particually truck ones - been there too
