Redded Tailights

Recommended Posts

No, but done properly most WOF places won't notice. If you buy "proper" ones that use red plastic, not a tint spray, then they are legal.

WOF rules state: Tinting

It is illegal to apply any kind of tint film, tint paint or opaque sticker to any lamp which has a function other than decoration (eg non-cosmetic).

I've had it done to mine for ages now and never had a problem with the 5-0 or VTNZ testing stations (twice).

Definitely a cheap but worthwhile mod.

I used red window stain (in a spray can) followed by clear coat (also in a can).

Yep, as Graham said, red window stain.

I used a white knight glass stain where the lid is the approx. colour. White knight clear acrylic for clear coat.

Does the light glow red when you indicate or does it still come through with an orange tinge from the plastic beneath?

Also where abouts did you buy the paint from?

Mitre 10 sells the paint. I did my E30, one coat on the orange, then 2 coats over everthing except the reverse lights. Then 2 coats of clear. The indicators still flash slightly orange and no problems with WOF from a testing station. If you take the lights out and mask them up very neatly and do a good job, no one will notice.

I did extra coats on the indicators to make them red and they indicate red. WOF rules state rear indicators must be red or amber, fronts white or amber and sides amber only. So being red isn't a problem.

Try using Duplicolor Metalcast Red (which you can get from Repco) and do it as Glenn said.

I didn't need to clearcoat over it, and it looks good.

Cool, thanks guys. I'll have a shot at this when I get back from Singapore. I've been wanting to get rid of the ambers for a while, but don't like the clear, crystal or smoked look.
