Summer Work

Recommended Posts

Hello Forum!

I have a friend looking for summer work. She needs to cover a certain number of hours to complete her BE. She just finished her 2nd year in Electrical Eng. I think she is after general engineering hours.

Any suggestions on where she might be able to get some work or if you know anyone looking for people? It would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

Been there and done that - it ain't easy finding work to cover those hours (especially in this economic climate). All I can suggest is that she gets out her CV and starts firing it out to everyone she can think of. If she starts with the bigger companies that specialise in electrical (telecom, vector etc, etc, etc) she might have more of a chance. Also don't forget student job search.

Good idea putting it to the masses though.

Yeah due to current economic condition she is finding that most companies arent hiring students for summer work this year. Great idea on the student job search! i completely forgot about it... will pass it on, cheers!

Just in case anyone can help out 120 days need to be done, at least 40 of those need to be practical, eg in a workshop. And another 40 as professional practice, for a professional engineering firm or similar. Given that she's only second year I'm guessing she needs to get the practical stuff done as she wont really be a lot of use to anyone for professional work.

There heaps of stuff that can be done for practical, though she's probably left it a bit late to find something now. Tell her to call round some mechanical workshops, electrical places, or even the power companies might have something. She could probably even run wiring for sparky. It doesn't have to be that relative to the degree, eg I did practical hours for civil making motorcycle exhausts.

So I'm taking it she needs mech or elec eng. hours? ie not structural or civil or geotech?

Cubic NZ in Mt Eden often hire electrical / electronic engineering students over the summer break - she's probably left it a bit late but it may be still worth ringing John Gibson (Engineering Manager) on the off chance

No as she is a 2nd year she is just after the general hours. so anything would be sweet.. go goes down to how you write the report anyway. :-)

Ok, I'll ask if we have something here. I've been picking up alot of the slack in the engineering department lately as my workload has dropped off, but there may still be some left. Will be general civil and structural engineering experience with some geotech and effluent design, and maybe some contract supervision.

What dates are we talking and would she be willing to move to Paihia for the summer?

If she's really stuck,

I have my car that needs to have the stand-alone ecu to be wired in at sum stage over the next few months.

that, and probably sum sparky work, hanging lights and repairing pumps etc
