That would be my badass black belt grading cert in Bujinkan Kobudo (ninjutsu).

:ph34r::D

I've studied a few other martial arts, but ninjutsu would definitely be my preference. I haven't trained regularly for over a year now.

The Bujinkan is an international martial arts organization, which is based on fighting tactics from nine ryu-ha (traditions, schools) that were established in ancient Japan. These nine schools stretch as far back as the 7th century. In the past the Bujinkan has been solely associated with the art of Ninjutsu, but actually it is derived of fighting styles of the nine schools and only three of these schools emphasis Ninjutsu, the remaining six emphasis on the mainstream bujutsu (martial techniques). do you have any training photos?

does your club compete on any level?

how long have you been training in martial arts as a whole?

what is your view on martial arts today? are thet still relevant to you? or do you find martial arts has become more of a watered down version of itself too drenched in a history not of our own, yet the so called beliefs and possible original movements (not likely) are still applied in todays world. Do you have a "proper" instuctor versed in the art or a student of a students friend who "kinda" knows Bujinkan Kobudo... like some arts seem to have now! :drugs: ..

martial arts to me has a place, but unfortunatly alot of it is steeped in tradition and not focused on development of the art, this is unfortunate as all the movements were made up and researched many many years ago and do need to be analysed, I feel all the movements have changed over time as the original masters and there sole student passed away.

whole forms have been lost and a chinese wisper effect has almost taken care of the rest. to me Traditional forms are little more than useless as no one focusses enough on the techniques developement, for example Chi Sao or literaly 黐手 for those fluent, can only be truly and effectively taught by someone who is a master in the movement...ie thats there vice, yet my club does this movement from black belt up.. i see where my instuctors motives are and i like the use of the technique but my club only uses it as a sensitisation excercise that works great. other schools will teach it as part of the art yet the instuctor is not truly teaching them the correct form. Then they inturn go off and start a club whos students go and start another....on and on.

martial arts is little more than exercise in many clubs as the instructors are what i would class as non-martial artists or 'play fighters' which is a sad thing, because there are many talented people being taught by sub standard, ill informed, mal trained, so called instructors.

me and my instructor used to go to clubs and seminars and talk with the instructor and listen to them bullshit there way through a converstation / seminar, then ask for a demonstration of a technique only to be shown some lacking movement that was laughable at best and when prompted to explain what they were doing mechanicly they have no idea... hmm obviously broken it down and studied that then...

damn i can write, incoherently at best!.. i cant be bothered rearranging and fixing it.. so if you get it sweet, if you dont, read it again.

to close on this moan, i would just like to say that although not everyone can be a martial artist, out of those that are, most are not what i would call a martial artist.

Well! Wasn't this a bit of a surprise. Some serious & reasoned discussion for a change. **breath of fresh air enters the room**

In many ways I agree with you Damien. So many martial arts have been diluted to the point where they have become 'sport' either for fitness or entertainment, and pay only tacit dues to their original roots. Some retain rigours of discipline, and some go further to instill the ethos of budo in the serious practitioners.

Regretfully our 'modern western society' recognises most old forms of martial arts as violent. That has meant much of the full contact training styles have turned into sport versions. Just look at a classic karate kumite: a half-point for a hit, a full point for a decisive hit, and penalties if there is sufficient force as to potentially injure your opponent. As Pirelli would say, "Power is nothing without control." But most old-school karate styles wre designed for one-hit-one-kill, with armour.

Martial arts are so much more than the combinations of movements and forms. Tradition is a strong part of the arts, yet this is what appears to isolate many modern practitioners as the values behind the traditions no longer exist.

Bujinkan training retains full contact training, including throws, locks, strikes, etc.

Indeed it really does boil down to the inspiration of the instructor. But that is just a chain, in that the instructors of today will only ever be as good as the instructors that passed on that knowledge.

If I think of the instructors I have learned from, my first Bujinkan sensei taught me the most. These days he is shidoshi-kai (5th dan), after spending some years training in the grand-masters dojo in Japan. Personally I've been training on & off for around 10 years, and have 'tasted' aikido, tae kwon do & one school of kung fu. However most instructors I have found to be enthusiastic, but uninspiring.

Whoa, just realised I wrote an essay there. Maybe we should start a new thread.

maybe we shouldnt!!

we will just start talking in essay form!

its good to see a martial artist that does think about what training in our culture has to offer, and even more interesting to see another martial artist that can break down and look at the meaning of it.

the misconceptions and misleading information that is being spread around is mostly disheartening, i feel martial arts should be progressive, not stagnant.

you gave the example of traditional one hit, one kill.. with armour. how relevant is this in todays society? As much as i would like, and im sure most other males would is there own set of badass armour! but alas this is not the case, this theory needs to be adapted to our laws and culture, that theory can be adapted to now represent one hit, one incapasitation.. ie one inch punch.

in our martial art we use the 1-warning, 2-heavy strike, 3-death. obviously this last movement and more often than not the second are to be left till the most extreme of cases, but here adaptation can be made.

the traditions are of great significance dont get me wrong, the teachings regarding training are valuable even more so today, but the movements and the incorrect teaching is deaply concerning.. even more so are the students that seem to never question what is being taught or even ask why they are doing it in the first place!

cheers shadow!
