New Tui's Billboard Banned

Recommended Posts

A beer billboard that offended many Christian groups in Hamilton is coming down almost as quickly as it went up.

The Tui billboards, including one on the corner of Claudelands Rd and Grey St in Hamilton, reads: "Let's take a moment this Christmas to think about Christ. Yeah right."

Its message has received mixed reviews from Christians across the country. In Christchurch, one Catholic bishop said the ad was "great" and helped remind people about the meaning of Christmas, and a Methodist Church of New Zealand spokesman said the billboard made a good point.

But, in Hamilton, the joke was lost on Father Frank Eggleton, parish priest of the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who labelled the provocative billboard "appalling" and said it demeaned the holiness and meaning of Christmas.

There was/is one of those on the motorway at Ellerslie - saw it there last weekend and figured it would provoke some complaints.

I actually think it is taking the micky out of society, not religion - seems to me it is at least equally pointing out how little we think about the origins of christmas and just go with the commercial part of it.

Feel obliged to add, I am NOT christian, and billboard/lack of thinking about christ at christmas does not offend me in the slightest - if anything would classify myself as agnostic.

I agree with nic325i.

Its reminding us about the actual reason Christmas is actually here, but like the ad points out, society doesn't care. If it werent for that bubba born in a stable, we wouldnt have Christmas

I cracked up laughing when I saw this at elleslie and I just about hit the median barrier! I was in tears!

A week later somebody had scaled it and tore the "right" part off it.

I am not christian, and if I were it still would not offend me as it is taking the micky out of society.

The thing that always makes me laugh when stories like this come out is that if the ministers DIDN'T make a point about it and get all excited, 90% of the public wouldn't really notice the signs or think it is a big deal and everyone that complains just looks like a complete tosser.
