1987 318i

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm looking at a 1987 NZ new 318i, 2-door coupe, 4-cyl 1800cc.

Is this car supposed to have a cambelt or camchain? The current owner believes it is a chain, but i think it's got a belt.

What other issues should I look out for on this car? It's nice and straight, but feels a tad bit sluggish on take off.

Cheers

If its '87 the motor will be an m10, which runs a camchain.

but feels a tad bit sluggish on take off.

is it an auto?

it is a 318 after all - it probably feels a bit sluggish all the time

Thanks for the input guys.

Yes it's an auto. This is the first time i've driven an E30, does the gas pedal really feel heavy on these cars or is the spring just too hard? I found myself applying a lot more oomph than i normally would to get the car to accelerate.

Where do i check the engine code, would it be on the VIN plate in the engine compartment?

Had a bit of ruist on the inside of the boot, is this something that would fail the WoF?

Cheers fellas!

Throttle was also stiff compared to jappas in my e30. I liked it.

edit, by throttle I mean pedal

Stiff pedal is easy fix. Spray some CRC or WD40 or Inox etc in where the throttle cable ends on the engine side

How much do you guys reckon it's worth?

Silver (straight body, no dings)

Cloth interior, very tidy, just a tear in the middle of the driver's seat, small crack on dash

NZ new

M10 motor, done 145ks

1987

How long is a piece of string? ;) Hard to say without pics etc...

1.5-2K?? Seeing as its a 2-door.

I am not a fan of the stiff bmw throttles - I always take half a turn to a full turn off the spring on the throttle body to make it less stiff - still returns/snaps closed fine. Less wear/strain on the cable to.
