ispansbab 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2009 Hi All, I'm looking at a 1987 NZ new 318i, 2-door coupe, 4-cyl 1800cc. Is this car supposed to have a cambelt or camchain? The current owner believes it is a chain, but i think it's got a belt. What other issues should I look out for on this car? It's nice and straight, but feels a tad bit sluggish on take off. Cheers
Cale 36 Report post Posted February 16, 2009 If its '87 the motor will be an m10, which runs a camchain.
Gus 5 Report post Posted February 16, 2009 but feels a tad bit sluggish on take off. is it an auto? it is a 318 after all - it probably feels a bit sluggish all the time
ispansbab 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2009 Thanks for the input guys. Yes it's an auto. This is the first time i've driven an E30, does the gas pedal really feel heavy on these cars or is the spring just too hard? I found myself applying a lot more oomph than i normally would to get the car to accelerate. Where do i check the engine code, would it be on the VIN plate in the engine compartment? Had a bit of ruist on the inside of the boot, is this something that would fail the WoF? Cheers fellas!
ispansbab 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2009 Can i tell the engine code from the VIN/Chassis #?
euroitalian 62 Report post Posted February 16, 2009 Can i tell the engine code from the VIN/Chassis #? Not directly, but if you enter the last 7 digits into BMW parts program like: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do it will tell you which engine was fitted. 320guy 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2009 My pedal is stiff aswell, but then again my mates e30's pedal was alot lighter.
Nobimmer 694 Report post Posted February 17, 2009 Stiff pedal is easy fix. Spray some CRC or WD40 or Inox etc in where the throttle cable ends on the engine side

Cale 36 Report post Posted February 17, 2009 How long is a piece of string? Hard to say without pics etc... 1.5-2K?? Seeing as its a 2-door.
ispansbab 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2009 Fair enough. I've passed on it as it's a 2-door and auto. Looks nice though.
bravo 35 Report post Posted February 18, 2009 I am not a fan of the stiff bmw throttles - I always take half a turn to a full turn off the spring on the throttle body to make it less stiff - still returns/snaps closed fine. Less wear/strain on the cable to.
