Same here.

Neglected maintenance.. Some people are so stupid (In my case it was the PO fault, Bought the car overheating).

yeah, I always use the genuine thermostats with out a problem,

I've heard of some after market ones doing this

When I bought my e36 last year it always cooler than I thought it should. The heater was about as warm as the mother in laws breath. I found that the thermostat had broken as per yours and it had wedged itself open. Was genuine part.

mine was wedged closed... so lame!
