Jaydubs 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2009 Im talking about the 3 piece Foam/Rubber than sits on the underside of the bonnet, after 20 years it starts looking a bit ratty to say the least. BMW charges around $400-500 last time i checked but I've been told you can but a few metres of similar stuff from Para Rubber or similar for alot less, I'm a lil concerned any old stuff might melt/warp with the temp? Has anyone tried this or knows of a good substitute for the original foam/rubber? thanks

bravo 35 Report post Posted July 1, 2009 I just removed mine. Engine noise is louder, but only just. Best way to remove the old stuf is with a plastic spatula/burger flipper, and a vacuum cleaner - saves you getting bits of it all over your engine bay. Leaves behind the glue residue, but you can either put up with that (looks better than ratty foam) or clean it off - requires patience - or buy replacement foam once someone tells you where to get it. Maybe some sort of car-audio dynamat product would do the job as long as it's safe for high-temp applications?
louis297 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2009 is it bad if you dont run this foam ? what do you think would be the best substitute for it ?
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted July 1, 2009 is it bad if you dont run this foam ? what do you think would be the best substitute for it ? Its not absolutely necessary... its just sound insulation. Genuine would look tidier
Nobimmer 694 Report post Posted July 2, 2009 Just removed mine. Helps if you take the bonnet off. Get all the foam off with Graham's custom tool. Then get the glue off with De-solv it or Wax and grease remover etc. Looks way better and is only a tad bit louder.
louis297 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2009 By louder what do you mean, like just the sound of the engine ?
Nobimmer 694 Report post Posted July 2, 2009 Yes.Sounds like arse though if you have real rowdy tappets.
louis297 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2009 ah cool thanks, sorry for the hijack but should i just replace it with foam from para rubber or is there something better i could put over it ?
Cale 36 Report post Posted July 2, 2009 I would say as long as what you buy is close to same spec as original and it can be used in high temp applications (like what has been said) you will be fine. Only reason its there is to absorb the sound of the engine (remember e30's are luxury vehicles).

Thats alot better than the last price i got - granted that was a wee while ago... they said alot of E30 parts had come down in price in the last year or so...
