E36 M3 Turbo

Hi Guys,

I thought id post up my E36 M3 Turbo. It's a totally standard engine running an Autronic SM4 with complete Vanos control, GT35 Turbo, Tial External w/gate, 3.5" dump pipe splitting into a twin 2.5" system, Custom made Intake manifold, twin in tank Walbro pumps, Sard fuel pressure reg, and PWR intercooler.

The car was purchased in March of 2008 with the sole intention of turbo charging it. I'm well aware of the benefits of mounting the turbo on the Exh side and really wanted to achieve this, however being right hand drive the option of mounting the turbo at the lower rear of the engine on the Exh side was not an option due to the steering shaft being in the way (Grrrrrrrr!).

Top mounting the turbo was also out of the question, as the dump pipe would also need to pass by the steering shaft and not to mention the possible removal of the air conditioning being required. As the car is used as a GENUNINE street car I wanted to retain the air con and reluctantly decided to mount the turbo on the intake side. The turbo as well as the 3.5" dump pipe has been covered in a heat blanket to help retain as much heat as possible and at the same time to prevent elevated intake air temps.

The Autronic was fitted while it was N/A so I could play around with the Vanos settings to get a better feel for the engine and to see what settings would net what results. I was surprised to note that when the turbo was fitted that the intake air temps where similar if not slightly lower than when it was N/A. No doubt this would be attributed to the intercooler once engine speed (therefore air speed) was increased.

The car has covered approx 6,000kms since being turbocharged. I run 8psi boost for the moment and the plan is to rebuild the motor in the future with forged internals (Rods, Pistons, Studs etc) to be able to run up to 25-30psi boost!

Woah woah weee woah! thats a flashy looking engine, The blue would match my engine bay better though even if its the same colour :rolleyes:

Hes from the other side of the fence John im sure. Hey BMEP im really ineterested in how you set your turbo up on the intake side of the motor? Did you have a pipe go from the standard exhaust manifold routed across to the turbo??

Yeah Luke, probably right. It's just that there is someone in Gizzy doin' some out there sh*t with BMWs, like tubo M3s and V12 E46s.

Bellicose, I’m located in Sydney.

On 8psi boost it makes 397rhwp on a Dyno Dynamics Dyno. I also gave the car a run in shootout mode (some people say that shootout mode is the NON FUDGE power) and in shootout it made 385rwhp at 8psi.

Here are a few pics of the install from underneath. We initially simply continued from where the OEM pipes end as pictured below. We initially did this due to time constraints as the car had to pass an IM240 Emission test for the Engineers report that the car did pass. In the next few weeks we will be making a new Exhaust manifold to reduce the pipe length to the turbo. I will be also fitting 6 individual pyro’s that will allow me to trim each individual Cyl via the Autronic .Thus far I have purchased some Carrillo rods, JE pistons, Racetech Valve springs, Inconel Exh and Stainless Int valves, APR head and mains studs and am just working out what head gasket I will end up using before I finally remove/rebuild/replace the engine.

That is so awesome, looks like there was some time spent fabricating and making that work? Even though you were in a rush haha? I commend you on the setup I know for sure how tight things are trying to fit a turbo on the right hand side of the motor as I have just done so myeslf (same turbo also). Those power figures are amazing! :o

8psi and your making that kind of power is incredible. Gives me a bit more excitement as to what power I acheive car gets dynoed next week. I must remind myself though that your motor is much more powerful from stock let alone a turbo attached.

Looks like you have some serious plans for future modifications in mind also, should put out some wild figures mate. Any plans on the power your aiming for? How well is the rest of the car built for more power and/or are you going to address the rest of the chasis and driveline as well to compensate?

Will definitely be watching this closely cant wait to see it progress

Luke - I don't think you'll get to 400rwhp on such low boost as your car doesn't make as much power unboosted.

Haha yea I know Cam hence why I stated that his car motor makes a whole lot more power in its natural form :P these figures just back up in general that boosted BMW motors are prone for making great power on boost. I was also going to state ill probably be running more like 14-16psi.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm Happy you guys like the car/mods......

My target HP goal is approx 500-520rwhp once the engine is built. I have no doubt i can easily far exceed this goal with the hardware i am using however even now with a little less than 400rwhp and using soft compound 255/40/17 Falken Azenis on the rear BMW 8.5 x 17 Motorsport Wheels i have no traction in 1st or 2nd gear. I can only imagine what it would be like with an extra 100rwhp! The car has been fitted with AP Racing 330mm 4 Pot brakes up front and i have already fitted a complete 3.2lt M3 rear end to the car. The 3.2lt rear ends have a much larger/stronger diff. The rear of the car has also had additional strengthening via plates welded in during the fitment of the 3.2 lt rear end.

Yes there is a Ploycarbonate "Sight Glass" fitted to the end of the intake manifold. I originally used that design on my previous ride (a Sierra Cosworth) to be able to veiw the "smoke testing" in the plenum we were doing on the dyno at the time. I simply used the same concept on the M3 as well as it always gets alot of attention at shows etc.

Everything has been planned in advance for the rebuild/elevated boost/power. The engine also runs an Autronic 500R CDI that fires 6 High Energy Split Fire Coils. I have used these coils before on plenty of high boost (30psi) GTR (RB26 Engines) with great results.

Also what ecu did you run in the saff and what sort of power was it making?

As Ollie mentioned, my Saff had an Autronic SM4 ecu as well as a 500R CDI. The car ran a best of 11.36 @ 125mph on street slick type tyres on pump fuel and a T28 turbo. If you read threw the Passion Ford link Ollie posted there is much more info.

Great to hear from you :D When did you sell your Saff? I sold mine in March of 2008 after owning it for 12 years!!!!!! :o I had an offer i could not refuse hence selling it and staring all over again with the M3.

Hi All,

Thought id pass on an update for the guys that have an interest in my boosted S50B30 project......

A few weeks ago I decided to fit larger fuel injectors in anticipation of the rebuild and therefore had to retune the fuel side of things and while I was at it I decided to run the engine up to 10psi boost (from the 8psi I was running).

I initially intentionally set all the 10psi ignition load cells at a conservative (retarded) ignition advance to allow me to get a feel of how the engine responds to ignition advance at 10psi boost as well as listen for knock at the same time as I sneak up on the tune. On the first power run at 10psi the engine made 402rwhp (up from the 397 @ 8psi). The small gain was expected due to the lack of ign advance. I then added 2 deg of timing at all the 10psi load cells and the car made 426rwhp however it sounded like the engine rpm was flaring during the run indicating clutch slip. I then added another 2 deg of ign advance at all 10psi load cells and the engine made it to 4,500rpm before killing the clutch. I had a look at the data logs from the 426rwhp run and it confirmed that the engine rpm was not correlating to the road speed input (taken from the diff) when I did an insert overlay of the rpm vs road speed in the Autronic data log so the dyno sheet posted is not really what the engine truly made but at least its an indication.

I have since fitted an upgraded clutch and have been told I need to do at last 1,000 kms of normal city driving to bed the clutch in properly. Once this has been done I will hit the dyno again to complete the tune properly. Depending on the air temp on the day (by then the weather will be hotter) I would guess that there is an honest 435-440rwhp at 10psi in non-shoot out mode. I will also give the car a run in shoot out mode as well and as a guess I would say that it should see 420-425rwhp in shoot out mode at 10psi boot.

Unfortunately I have a lot on my plate at the moment and it may take me a few months before I have clocked up 1,000 kms of city driving. Once I have completed my 1,000 kms and have completed the tune I will keep you guys posted of the results......
