Make it hard for thieves

Recently, like in the last few days there have been several burglaries in the East Tamaki area. The thieves are targeting automotive related industries. I thought I would post this up for you guys who are in business or have security concerns. In our industry, computers and scan tools are the most important tools that we have. Loose them and the interruption to running your business is huge. I spent yesterday and most of this morning securing items dear to me and my business. I should have taken some pictures, but I havent, for obvious reasons. If I loose my keyboards or my screens, it doesnt matter, if they break the computer, it still doesnt matter, what does matter is retaining my hard drives and scanning gear. This morning I pulled the side off every computer and fitted plates inside and bolting them down to either desks or tables. Thieves are restricted by time, make it hard for them, especially if you cant afford to loose vital information on your computers or laptops. Make sure all vital discs and back up are kept seperatley or in different locations, things that mean heaps to you personaly, like photos, make sure you have copies on external hard drives etc... incase you do loose your computer. Look around your house or your business and see how vulnerable you are and spend a little time & money to protect yourself from assholes like this. Loosing tools & toys isnt such a big deal, they are easily replaced, information & data isn't.

I'd really like to make man traps for these pricks and make them bleed, however, its illegal, your not allowed to hurt thieves and they'll end up getting ACC at our cost..... I'm starting to rant now

one company i worked for did a semi manual back up every night,and external hard drives went into a huge old safe/fire safe.More senior staff took turns to stay behind for 20 minutes or so and then secure teh drives..

Thaught about a Hotswap drive rack? instead of taking the entire computer home with you... you could just remove it's drive(s)

Data security is a big issue now days.

We have a NAS hard drive. Backed up daily by script (automatic). Swapped weekly with a mirror and taken home, so at all times there is an off-site backup with at most, a week's data on it.

We use ShadowProtect to backup to disk, then back that up to tape (offsite). ShadowProtect is awesome for disaster recovery - lets you recover an entire server as fast as the data can be transferred (minutes vs hours).

DR planning is big business and it is surprising how few businesses actually take it really seriously. Until they lose a server and all the data on it....
