E39 528i running like crap

Recommended Posts

Hi, got me a new bmw, E39 528i, brought it with a slight shudder/miss under 3k while cold, this went away straight after test driving and the salesman at the yard said bring it back if it starts it again, plus i have a 1yr warranty so i was happy with that, it'll get fixed one way or another

Car had been groomed and engine bay steam cleaned so assumed it was just water somewhere it shouldn't be, but it has since come back and is still there when its warmed up, it lacks power when its doing this, BUT usually goes away (even when cold) if i turn it off and on again though

Any suggestions as to what it is? so i can tell them when it goes back in tomorrow because no doubt they'll send it to just a normal mechanic instead of a specialist, so if i can give some suggestions as to what i could be i might be able to get it back quicker which is ideal lol

Cheers,

Andrew

The warranty should be through a 3rd party company, which means you can specify an approved repairer for work (Usually any MTA or AA approved repairer). This means you can take it to Jerry Clayton or to most BMW specialists.

It possibly has water in the spark plug tubes from the steam cleaning.. dont leave it too long or it can end up damaging the coil/coils

And park it in the sun for a day with the bonnet open.

Get that engine bay bone dry!

It would be a good idea to take of the engine cover and make sure everything is dry underneath, let that good old Kiwi sun dry it out nicely for you.

Tip: check and replace as necessary the pollen filters (cabin air filters). There are two - on a 2nd hand car often these are horribly dirty.

Very easy to replace, GLenn can give you a new pair for a better price than BMW NZ. Never drive without the filters!

Tip 2: Connect a battery charger so that you don't flatten the battery whilst checking out all the toys and goodies inside the car during your "drying day":-)
