Ahh yes, Now I understand :)

You have a Netgear wireless router, which is good.

If you want to go any higher in gain, it would be beneficial to replace the access point. (router)

as the access points have a built in booster, 'home' access points have quite low boosters 100mW or so,

you can get larger ones with bigger boosters 600mW+

What's the computer running for wireless? USB adaptor, PCI card ect?

For the computer with crap signal just get an external antenna for it if you wireless device will support it. Get a directional one and point it at the router.

A USB wireless adaptor... I tried an extension on it and tried moving it around, but nothing changes

If its only upstairs can you not cable it in mate ?

You must have some serious stuff in your ceiling/floor for the signal to be affected that much.

Theres no insulation or anything?

Just timber wouldnt cause this amount of interference, unless the usb adaptor you have in the pc upstairs is faulty.

In that case, It could be an issue with the wireless adaptor/drivers... I've heard of some overheating.

Could try a driver update/test that wireless adaptor in another machine?

I swapped the adaptor to a new port and reloaded the driver disc. I'll try it in the other computer and see what happens. That might point to the adaptor being faulty. It's new too
