what digital camera?

im fully getting sick of using normal cameras and having to get them developed and then have to scan them and put them on the computer so i decided i ll get a digital camera and just wanted to know what kind everyone else is using what is the quality like etc etc

You need to answer these following questions:

Are you doing Macro?

Do you want loooong exposure times?

Resolution, 4 MP will be enough I would imange.

What are you taking pics of, cars, scenary, racing, night time etc

How many high res shots will you take (relating to card memory )

Size..small, thin, does it matter?

Do you need zoom?... a attachable lens maybe?

i was loking at a 3.1mp i dont know if thats any good

but i dont want a real flash one cos ill proberbly loose it

mostly for pictures of cars form car show and meets and proberbly for just for genral night and day use

but yea something like that

i just wanted to know what everyone else uses or what kind of camera they recomend cos i proberbly use a camera for the same purposes as i do for like pics orf cars and that etc

I've got a Sony P72 (whatever that means, I always associated it with the Leyland P72 from Aussie :mosh: ) with 3.2mp. Can pic em up for about 600 now, and it seems to be an alright camera. Only problem is that there seems to be a pause after I shoot the photo, meaning that a good redline pic is quite hard to get, but I havent read all of the owners manual yet.

I am looking too and the fuji s5500 seems good value.10 x optical zoom lens,a reasonable size for us males to grasp and is 4mp.Dick Smith has em for just under 600.The minolta dimage z3 has a 12 x digital zoom but is more $.With my old slr i nnever seemed to have the right size lens on hand. I dont know enough about digital cameras yet,but i want as much of a slr replica as poss....Macro is close up photography like taking a photo of a bee on a flower from only a few cms away.Any comments on the fuji or minolta welcomed.....

I went for the Sony DSC W-1. Good reliable & easy to use.

Easy to upload pictures but you'll need some software like photoshop for editing stuff. 6x zoom 5.1Megapixels good camera.

Best place I found for pricing cameras was www.digitalcameras.co.nz

They do dutyfree if you have the chance to leave the country.

I have the same one, and it is fine.

A good easy to use camera.

But like everything, you get what you pay for.

Kiwi535, grab tje Fujifilm S7000, may only have a 6x opt instead of the 10x but it's by far a seriously wicked camera and you'll never need a 10x zoom for a start.

I got the S602Z which is the predecesor of the S7000, SLR styled 6MP with full manual controls...no complaints, and you've all seen my photos on here

Using an SLR digital camera is by far the most usable camera, if you've got money to burn go for the Cannon EOS range, interchangeable SLR lenses on digital cameras :thumb: :thumb:

hmmm yeah sounds expensive for something i will proberbly loose or ruin like my last digi cam which was a Casio Exilim card camera but that went throuhg a wash in the washing machine so thats stuffed

Prepared to be corrected - but forget digital zoom and go for optical zoom. Digital zoom can be achieved on computer?

I own a Sony DSC U20 (brilliant - top piece of kit and SO small) and a Sony W1 (slightly larger, chunkier, but again, brillliant). Rate the Sony gear - but that has always been my preference. Go high megapixels / optical zoom, in my opinion.

Bimmerboy, you should be able to pick up something good enough to do what you want for $400-$500, and get something pretty good for $500-$600. I was looking a month or so ago, and found that I could get a really decent camera for around the $600 mark if I shopped around. Or about $700 if you buy from a regular retailer like Noel Leeming or Harvey Norman. The deals are to be had at the online stores, digital camera specialists and parallel importers although all the usual caveats go along with these of course.

I am a SLR - look-alike fan, and so was taken by the fuji S5000/s6000 etc range, even though these cameras are much more bulky, they come with heaps of resolution and optical zoom. There are other cameras of a more "standard" style with as many options and same price, but I didn't look at them too much after i had decided what I wanted.

Other things to be aware of are battery life, cost of batteries and whether it has its own rechargeable or AA's, the type, cost and size of storage, and whether you have other devices which share the same storage type.

Note some cameras also take video and/or sound.

I am not much of a photographer, so I am talking more about the technology side of things as I don't know jack about the photo-functions side of things.

i also saw those cameras that are like 5.1mp but they are brands i hav never herd of for like $200

which is tempting cos of the price side of things and the fact that its 5.1mp but u know what they say .. u get what u pay for
