Fuel Pump Problems

So on sunday my fuel pump shat itself, thankfully not far from home when i stopped for a pie!

I have put in a new one(another intank) I got from the wreckers but it wont pump enough to push up to the engine(will pump it out at the bottom of the car..

I have connected +12v to it from the cig lighter and it'll pump fine..

I dont have a multi meter to test the original wires for it.

Suggestions/Solutions?

(wire it to acc on?)

Possibly the fuel pump relay. Did you check voltage supply to the fuel pump with a multimeter ? Sounds like youve got voltage drop through the relay if you can supply a seperate power supply and it works properly.

Edit :Oops...you didnt use a multimeter. You need to try that or just replace the relay. That might have been the problem in the first place maybe

You could temporarily bridge terminal 30 & 87 in the relay plug to check . But make sure you remove it when you turn the car off

You may not realise this but there are two types of fuel pumps, PFL and FL are slightly different, the PFL are only a transfer pump and run at low pressure and they need and inline pump to build the pressure up.

Was the pump you replaced it with identical?

The physical motor size is different between the PFL and FL so it's easy to tell.

Just tried that and still no go, ive just got the line sitting up above the engine with a bottle at the moment lol my battery is pretty much dead now too *doh*

Am i going to run into problems putting it on acc power for the meantime, should be fine aslong as i dont leave it sitting on with the pump going and engine not running right?

When henry was here yesterday we moved around all the blue relays in the fuse box before pulling and testing the dead pump, im guessing they wont have anything to do with it though as terminal 30 & 87 are in the other relay(black) (is that the fuel pump relay?)

Next to where the power steering resevoir is / was there is a black cover. Under that there will be a set of relays. The front one is the fuel pump relay. Check and tell me if you find it. If it is a 4 or 5 pin relay...bridge terminal 30 & 87 not 87a

Emily is right about the pumps. Some are only lift pumps and not pressure pumps. If you have fitted the wrong pump it wont work. Are you absolutely sure it works properly and runs the car if you supply power to it ??

5 pin relay (its a pre fl m20b25 also)

the pumps are quite similar both from 318 fl. my dead one had aluminium casing and about 15% taller than the one i replaced it with, (all orange plastic and has square solid plastic filter on the bottom whereas the old one had a black material around a grid thingy... also the new pump has the location of fuel line and return swapped around.

havnt tried to run the car with the other power but will try later as i have to goto work now

Sorry I looked at wrong diagram. Behind the plastic cover along the back of the firewall there are 3 relays. The fuel pump one is the centre one

Edit: Try borrowing or buy a cheap multimeter and start from scratch rather than going on a wild goose chase. Check that you have 12v supply at the pump.. if you dont then continue with checking the rest. You also need to determine whether the pump is the right one or not

sounds like they have supplied you the wrong fuel pump. You need the taller type . shorter type wont work

top pump shows the pump you need it to look like

bottom shows the type that will not go in your car. (even if connections match up)

4 different types of pumps for FL E30. Make sure you match the correct one. I have a couple of the common problematic ones and about 20 of the other ones.

Call if you have difficulty sorting it.

My exact problem right there then.. i thought i could jimmy it up *doh* (yeh i made an adapter for the power plugs)

Ive asked my brother to send me an inline pump from the wrecked 325 preFl and pickup from the tank, should i be wiring the inline to the connecters from my original pump?

If you run the same set up as the 325 it will be sweet, but would be less work to just exchange your pump with the correct one (with whoever supplied it) ive never tried this myself so not sure how much work is actually involved even though it sounds fairly strait forward, Glenn prob knows tho.

Yes you can just make the wiring loom longer to reach the new position of the pump. Make sure + is + and - is -. But why dont you just fit the correct pump ? Its alot more work and you'll need the mounting bracket, mounts etc

Thanks for your help guys all sorted now with an external and pickup (which is the small one in Emilys pic that i was trying to use as a pump lol!)
