it will be a 10;1 cr engine and that is the correct ecu for that engine .

check for vac leaks ,sticky ICV , faulty fuel pressure regulator , worn resistor track in the afm ,

fault crank sensors or bad connections to them . also check the Fuel quality switch on the side of the ecu is set to position zero .

there a few vac hoses which conect to the inlet manifold , make sure all are conected and in good condition and not blocked etc .

Oh and also, did you get the donor car? If so, wanna sell me the red leather?

Nope, I didn't go for the seats. I couldn't get my head around red leather seats in a car with blue and black trim, just seemed a little to porno for me. The seats in the car look like Motorsport originals, I don't think the red ones came from the donor car.

Thanks for all the great feedback, I will be down in the garage tonight having a closer look.

I did find this post on www.m535i.org.

"You can install the US ECU in a Euro car. The only problem is if you have the Euro car with the 218 bhp motor, there is no O2 sensor. The US ECU takes readings from the O2 sensor in the exhaust to calculate how rich or lean the car is running at that time and then modifies how much fuel is entering the motor. The Euro ECU does not have this input. Therefore when you stick the US ECU into a Euro car, there will be no O2 sensor reading. The car will run on the US ECU without an O2 sensor, but the chip in the US ECU is programmed so that if the O2 sensor fails or is disconnected, or not connected at all, the car will run at full rich. This will foul your plugs and also give you poor emissions."

I am guessing that if the M535i did come from a car with a cat converter, this may be contributing to the problem.

We didn't get any US spec cars over here. And if someone did happen to bring one over it would highly unlikely the engine ended up in your car. I wouldn't spend any time worrying about that and instead check the things others have mentioned in their posts.

If you're not au fait with M30 engines a quick trip to a BMW garage to talk to a mechanic would be your best bet for fixing the problem quickly.

Seeing as you're in the ECB/North Shore area there are plenty of places in your area I would trust with checking it out for you.

my thoughts , no us spec'd engines this side of the world , OZ cars got the gutless engine but why would you bring one here to NZ .

look at the basics like i suggested first , comon things to go on m30 engines.

vaccuum leaks cause the engines to stall and run rough when idling
