JaseNZ 53 Report post Posted March 25, 2010 Anybody know if the Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner by CRC is sold here in nz, If not what would be the best product to use to clean this bad boy up, (yes i know without touching it)
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted March 25, 2010 My suggestion would be... if it ain't broke.....don't fix it... MAF sensors are very sensitive and never use oil on K&N type filters.... they don't like it
JaseNZ 53 Report post Posted March 25, 2010 Was just thinking the very basic's of this slight hesitation and that giving it a clean (very carefully) wouldn't do any harm
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted March 25, 2010 Was just thinking the very basic's of this slight hesitation and that giving it a clean (very carefully) wouldn't do any harm Have you had it scanned yet ?
JaseNZ 53 Report post Posted March 25, 2010 I rang up the dealer and they were going to charge $97 for a scan and the cheapest i could get down here is $80 and this is just a scan as well. Needless to say i feel this is a complete ripoff so jumped on trademe and have purchased a $80 scanner , Its just basic but it does have a usb interface and can read off any generic code's so i purchased that instead, At least i can use it more than once and it also does live readings to. Anyway that should arrive next week and will see if it works ok and produces any error codes, note them down then clear them and then monitor things to see what comes up. I was assured it reads my car ok so if not he will refund money so nothing lost there really. Will just have to take it from there i guess.
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted March 25, 2010 I would agree that $80 is a bit of a ripoff. I'd still scan it first before fiddling though

euroitalian 62 Report post Posted March 25, 2010 A quote from Air Mass Sensor Manufacturer: "To enable air mass sensors to measure with the required precision, the measuring sensors themselves must be extremely thin. This makes them sensitive to mechanical damage. For this reason, air mass sensorsshould never be cleaned using compressed air. The hot-film sensor may be destroyed. We also strongly advice against using the cleaning sprays which are increasingly available on the market: If an air mass sensor is already defective, no improvement will be achieved by cleaning it. And if fully functional air mass sensors are treated in this way, the cleaning spray may damage the interior of the air mass sensor as well as the electronics in the component. To ensure reliable functions, we recommend installing a new air mass sensor."

Worked a treat but you just have to be delicate, as you know.Mine was filthy from use with a K&N filter, oil over the sensor etc. Been much better since though. just fyi. BM WORLD 1283 Report post Posted March 26, 2010 i had a e39 528i here a little while ago it ran a little rough at idel and when cold , had a pod type filter that was pretty dirty . i cleaned it out but when i refitted it the car ran like rubbish when cold , so i removed the afm and was looking inside it and notticed the hot film sensors had a decent amount of build up on it , so i just used the k&n filter spray cleaner stuff on it then hosed it out with water , dried it and refitted and it and it ran fine . I had nothing to loose and spares in the shelf if it didn't work

JaseNZ 53 Report post Posted March 28, 2010 Ok so scanner arrived ok, hooked it up and it connected with the pc straight away. No fault errors are showing so where to go from here then. I know the scanner is working ok as its reading everything else, going to set the graph going and start doing some live data recording i guess.
