Overheating issue

Recommended Posts

MY engine is a 320i and its overheating very very slowly. Like it takes while for it to overheat. Usually i can drive around with the temp on normal for atleast half an hour and after that the temp would slowly rise up. Overheating light doesnt go on but light may be faulty.

Could it be thermostat? And also the fan doesnt seem to be running fast too..

E30's overheating is a very common problem. Have a search around and see what you can find here and on other BMW forums.

Could be all sorts of things. Water pump, radiator, viscous fan coupling, thermostat, split hoses, head gasket etc etc.

Check your oil, if its milky your head gasket is gone. if not:

Replace your thermostat and waterpump.

Also make sure you do not have any leaks in the cooling system. Even a tiny leak can effect the pressure of the cooling system, this stops the water to flowing around properly.

My e30 slowly began to overheat in stop/go traffic.

Once the car is up to temperature, try inserting a rolled up a newspaper into the fan. If you can stop the fan, you need a new fan clutch. Worth while replacing the water pump while you're there.

Replaced fan clutch on mine and the temperature gauge has been half way since. M20's don't like to overheat.

It's not for the engine, tis for the cat.

If you move around quickly (like 60kph for 1km or more) does the temp go down?

+1 on Thermostat and waterpump.
