E39 Auto Trans Service

Recommended Posts

My 2003 530I Touring needs to go to Jeff Grays to be plugged into the BMW computer to try and diagnose the non-operational remote locking.

Since the car is Ex Japan with 145 000 ks on it, I wondered if I should get them to change the 'lifetime' trans fluid while they have it ?

Car is a M54 with A5S 325Z tranny

Should I let Grays do the fluid change, or am I better to go to a Transmission Specialist?

Is it necessary to hook the car to the BMW system to reset / clear codes etc, therefore I am better to get Grays to do the whole job?

Your thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

To save time and also to get it done properly...I'd get Grays to do both

Go to Grays. The trans can get the adaptations reset when you get oil changed.

I've looked into this as well camera, and the general rule is they need to be serviced, like any mechanical part, BMW agreed that it should be changed changing their mind on the original claim of lifetime fluid, but also argued that some vehicles had traveled very high milage without the fluid ever being changed so avoided the warranty claims etc.

A total flush is required and filters changed is the key, just draining the fluid and replacing isn't quite the same.\

They run well the E39 I still like mine seems to change very smoothly will service around $180k, we way off yet.

I have the M5 going in this week to JG for an oil service. Do you think they will run the "it doesn't need to be changed" spiel for the transmission?

I'd like it to be changed - feeling a little notchy on these cold mornings!

Just ask them to do it.... the customer is always right (sometimes)

We always suggest gearbox oil changes at 100k for autos & 50k for manuals & diffs.... oil doesn't last for ever
