m50 ticking noise

Recommended Posts

My m50's got abit of a ticking / knocking noise. Sometimes you can't hear it at all, Usually when you first start up cold its quite loud like almost a rod knock kinda loud, other times you can't hear it or its very quiet but still there. When driving it will come and go too.

It doesn't sound deep enough to be a bottem end knock but then again thats by going by youtube videos of rod knock.

If I pull the valve cover whats something to look out for ? Do m50 lifters make a tick if they are stuffed or something?

It's a non-vanos motor too.

Whats the engine oil capacity now since you modified your sump ?? Most m50/M52's run about 40% of there oil in the head when running.

Still dumped 7l in there.

It had the tick before the sump broke open but its slowly been getting worse especially the last couple days.

The oil pick up might be restricted if you didn't allow enough clearance for the oil pump to suck up oil. These engines require good oil flow and run alot of oil up top when running

make them solid with ball bearings and shims but you are still left with the issue of lack of oil!

what oil pressure is it running at?

have you checked that?

lift the rocker cover and check the cams for wear,

could also be a cam bearing?
