help electrical weirdness

Recommended Posts

hi there im brand new to this forum alltho i have found helpfull info in the past.

heres my new prob.

mrs took my 99 e46 318i to do the grocerys this sunday just gone and on leaving she went around a roundabout and the gauges went haywire. we have all gauges (temp, tacho, speedo, fuel) flicking from zero up about 10mm for example gas goes from empty to quater. this happens constantly wether the cars running or not even if the keys are out. at one point the the indicators on the cluster were flashing. so far ive disconected the battery hoping it would reset which ever computer has sh*t its self. has any 1 seen this before? any solutions? i must add the car runs and drives fine. :o

sounds to me like the following.

either a faulty body module, faulty cluster, poor connection with a plug in the wiring loom, possibly in the back of the cluster, or at the body module, or somewhere like that, or a short in the loom

It needs to be scanned. We had a similar problem with a compact last week....was a faulty alternator. Can look at it for you if you like.

Ph. 2722546 ask for me

BTW: Welcome to the forum Ben

ahh didnt think of that.

yes faulty altinators can do some weird sh*t.

And so can faulty batteries on late model euro cars.

^+1 only seems to be euros for some reason.

when i was a mechanic it only ever seemed to effect mondeos, focus's, escorts etc..

awesum guys thanks its due to go into an auto sparky tomorow. going on what has been said i doubt very much it is the battery as i replaced it 1-2 month ago with a very good battery cant remember which brand but i know it was a goodie and if by any chance it is it will be covered under warantee. ive been told it could be a faulty cluster but in reality i wont know till its been through diagnostic. fingers crossed its nothing i cant fix myself.
