Few noob questions about M20's

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. New on here. I know i will probably get told to use the search button but its late, i have work early tomorrow and i really dont know what to type to search what i want to know. please dont hate

Basicly i got given an e30. 320i japanese import with a blown auto. I converted it to manual and plan to put in adjustable coils and a locker (too cheap to buy a LSD atm lol) and drift it as i cant drive my fc to the track and its a pain towing it out as i miss half the night if i leave after work.

So basicly i want enough power to be able to drift my e30. The old M20B20 still goes pretty good (nice rattly rockers but still good). But i dont think 118hp is going to cut it after driving something with near 400 atws :( There was an e30 325 and he still had to use 12-15 clutch kicks to get around the track.

Im over in Aus and here we have stupid rules about how you cant drive turbo or anything over 200kw's before you get your open licence (hence why i cant drive my fc). I dont want crazy power. I just want to be able to go out on practise nights after work and have a bit of fun and be able to spin 2nd/3rd gear without a heap of clutch kicking.

Was thinking about a stroker motor but not sure whats involved and how hard it is. I would appreciate it if someone could either post a link to a detailed stroker build thread or tell me what i need.

Am i able to get away with:

-my m20b20 head (with a port and polish and maybe larger valves)

-a 2.7 bottom end

-2.5 ecu and intake manifold

-either 2.7/2.5 injectors?

-will my b20 exhaust work? (it has extractors and a full system so will use if i can)

Will i have to change anything in the bottom end or can i just bolt my head on to increase the compression and rev limit? Or should i put in my b20 rods with the b27 crank and pistons?

Also what wiring loom would i use? Can i get away with my current one and just plug in the other ecu? (im not overly good with wiring so would love it if i could get away with it)

Anything else i should know? I just want something i can have a bit of fun in without having a leg like a tree trunk to clutch kick every 5 seconds.

Thanks heaps in advance guys.

actually while i think of it, is there anything i could do to my b20 to get more power out of it? Im hoping for around the 200hp mark if thats possible? Would i be best off going with the stroker for that or can i get away with the b20 and get that kind of power?

thanks for the link. Had a bit of a read. Still a little confusing lol. Ive read so much different stuff on strokers i just get confused.

Would putting a b20 head on a b27 bottom end (ie a complete b27 short motor) work? Would it have any gains and would it be able to rev past 4500rpm?

I dont have a lot of money to spend. I was hoping for something around the $1500max mark? Is that possible?

Then i have a bit more for the suspension etc but dont want to go crazy on a car im just going to have fun in and not actually compete

Yep, first option in that link, standard B27 bottom end with B20 head. Keen to try this myself.

Would depend on how much you can get the parts for and whether or not you can do it yourself, but yeah probably. Edited by M20B20ONP

Yes to the b27 block it will work, pulls faster and better than a b25 IMO.

hmm ok so i have rung 2 wreckers today. There are only 3 wreckers around here. And only 2 that do decent prices.

First one i run and i can get a b27 complete long motor for $700 (just pull my head off and change over) and i can get an ecu for $195. Mine is a 89 jap spec with motronic so i should be able to not change the loom right?

Then i decided to ask about a m30b35 conversion...they want $2500 :(

Then i rung the other cheap yard. They have no m20 motors left :( However they have a m30b35 for under$600 and the gearbox for $450... Is this a worthy conversion? Will it make more power than a stroker? And will it be an easy conversion that i can do in a couple weekends with a couple mates?

Is there any links to step by step conversions on this? Theres always talk about it and i found a great site today explaining everything that needs to be done but not really step by step. Whichever way i go i will make sure i take heaps of photos and post up a detailed thread on everything i do so if anyone else wants to do a similiar conversion they will have a full guide on what to do (or what not to do if it doesnt work :P)
