MGL 4 Report post Posted January 27, 2011 So my car over heated this morning, got up to temp, then just kept going! The radiator hose at the top was super hot. and the bottom one wasnt even warm. I'd going with this being a thermostat right? Is there anything else I should be looking at do you think? Cheers, Matt
bimmer boy 21 Report post Posted January 27, 2011 Yeah I would say its the thermostat man, I had a overheating problem in my E39 which ended out being the fan clutch or something since it would sometimes stick and not spin and stand still traffic. But in your case I would say the first port of call would be to change out the thermostat

Jono51 59 Report post Posted January 30, 2011 I would't buy any parts until the car has been diagnosed. otherwise you will be going around in circles.
allan 295 Report post Posted January 30, 2011 +1 to what Jono just said . The e39 has a couple of different types of thermostat fitted to them. If it turns out that this is the problem then by all means replace it along with the water pump with a metal impellor. For what it is worth check the anti freeze concentration and ph levels of the coolant as well.
MGL 4 Report post Posted February 1, 2011 I've stuck in the new thermostat- seems to have sorted the problem. Seems to be holding almost exactly at half way on the guage. I'll keep an eye on it over the next week or so. Hopefully thats all it is! Next thing is to fix that boogie shock!
