I just started a site

Simple colour scheme

Easy to read fonts/wording style

Soft colours that arent hard on the eyes or bold

Font sizes and colours that dont overwelm the user

Navigation bar that is clear but again not overwelming (only buttons that are needed).

Uses good layout and is not all over the place

Does not have overuse of graphics / pictures.

etc etc

its not perfect... take for example themenubar in the top left that is in a font that is too small... and also the blurry bimmersport logo, but is still a bloody good site.

a simple colourscheme doesnt mean you only have to use basic black yellow white red green ... use variants of these.

can you do a basic graphic layout .. say using photoshop or something to give me a visual .. i'm not too good with words ... i wrk better with something visual guiding me ..

Its not as easy as it sounds, your best bet would be to go look at magazines. They, believe it or not base all of there layout work around actually artist / design movements.

Okay, went and fired up the old PC with a lot of pops creaks, hisses and farts, and got the prog and site list I told you about.

MUST HAVE HTML APPS

Free HTML Editor (one of the best IMHO) - 1st Page 2000 by EVRSoft

Free FTP Client (again, one of the best - easy to use, and plenty of configuration options if required) - WS_FTP Limited Edition

Free HTML Editor for those quick and nasty last-minute edits - Wordpad as found on most Windows PC's.

Free CSS editor - TopStyle Lite - bloody great css editor.

Image Editor - Photoshop 7.0 and Image Ready for Photoshop 7.0

Any good HTML and CSS stylesheet validator so that you know your coding will work on all browsers - I use a command-line/text-based one, but there are plenty of GUI and web-based ones out there. You should really use CSS stylesheets - they are a step towards XML and are really very, very good. You can even use them to replace frames - frames suck!

That is my list of essential apps - as you get more skilled feel fre to broaden it up to include other graphics programs and code compilers etc.

www.htmlhelp.com - a great site run by the Web Design Group - you will only find so-called "correct" coding advice here. Includes extensive HTML reference material including info on CSS Stylesheets, an HTML validator a CSS validator, and tutorials.

CSS Stylesheet Quick-Reference Guide - invaluable reference if yo start using Stylesheets.

www.dynamicdrive.com - Site full to the brim with DHTML scripts (Dynamic HTML) for all those cool effects - use with caution unles you want your site to be a flashing, moving behemoth. Used tasetfully and cleverly DHTML is cool and makes you site work better.

Font Styles Tutorial - How to make changing the font easier and consistent throughout your website by using styles instead of <FONT...> tags

Free Web-graphics site - self explanatory - buttons, gifs, arrows, backgrounds, the lot - just avoid the tacky ones of which there are thousands.

HTML Colour Quick-reference chart

- A necessity to quickly find the HTML code for the colour you wish to use and to ensure it will actually work in peoples browsers - sure Photoshop can tell you, but this is way faster when coding than opening up Photoshop.

HTML Tag Quicklist - the ulitmate tag reference - need to know what a tag does and how to use it? Need to know what tag to use? This is the list for you!

idocs Guide to HTML - Everything a beginner needs to know about HTML with easy to understand and follow tutorials on everything to forms and frames to stylesheets, scripts and tables.

Ive never made a website before, and i dont know how to make something look professional, id just strongly suggest to get rid of everything that flashes or moves, as has already been said.

And as for the background, change it to a colour that isn't so hard on the eyes. Thats why i closed the window, i got a headache :banghead:

layout isnt very efficient.. ok im looking at the BMW list of products..

had to wait through all this bollocks that im not interested in to see what i wanted..at the bottom of the page.!!

maybe off the home BMW link put another pop down menue and put things into catergories (interiour/exteriour/mini/E36/E46 etc)

HAHA .. i knew someone would pick on the BMW section straight away ... that will be improved, just i wanted to get the site live for the free text weekend, so i can spam people.

But yes there will be prices, and information and sections when it's complete.

I just haven't had the time to do everything and juggle uni (final year) at the same time ....
