sam726 29 Report post Posted April 18, 2012 (edited) Hi there, Trying to figure out whats going wrong with the driveline of my 1990 535is manual. There was vibration and 'clunking' noises about 3 weeks ago, the driveline coupling was replaced and all was fixed and driving smooth, hanger bearing checked at the same time and was visually good but not checked 100% so could have been starting to go possibly. Until last week suddenly the vibrations re-occured. When they were minor it was jacked up and seen that the coupling was starting to break already, this was about a week ago. My mechanics been under it today and established the hanger is now broken into 2 pieces and the coupling breaking away. The gearbox and engine mounts are good. Was wondering if anyone could give some ideas or shed some light as to what couldve caused the hanger to start breaking down only after the coupling was replaced? tcbaurpower 5 Report post Posted April 18, 2012 Hi I have also recently replace the centre bearing on my e28 535i driveshalf and what caused that was the diff nuts had lossened which then pulled one end of the drive shalf down. That might be an area to look at. The roads down here are very rough at them moment. Thread hi-jack: Anyone have a at DIY solution to driveshalf balancing? Where do I take it to get done? hybrid 1039 Report post Posted April 18, 2012 The hanger bearing needs to be preloaded when you reinstall it. Any mechanic trained would do this. Otherwise you may have an unbalanced driveshaft. sam726 29 Report post Posted April 18, 2012 Have got a new hanger and coupling from ADL and are being installing at the moment, seemed to be a difference between the first coupling and the one going in now. Will post a comparison of the two later on when im home. ADL checked the driveshaft too and it was sweet, time will soon tell if the problem reoccurs but will probably get it checked at another driveline specialist this week. Yes, With out the preloaded the center the driveshaft has less 'support' when going over bumps underload. Its more a problem when the hanger bearing rubber starts to get old. Sam G: If this is the second time you've had the problem I would get the drive shaft spun up on a balancing manchine. Mind you, you can feel an unbalanced drive shaft a mile off. jacknz 1 Report post Posted April 26, 2012 That really looks like a alignment issue to me, I noticed that the hanger mount seems to have a fair bit of allowance for adjustment, was it all straight when it went it was finished? plus the weld on the mount doesn't look as if it has hardly any penetration between the two halves. just my 5 cents worth.
