e39 issues

Recommended Posts

Had a look at an E39 528i tonight, been used as a bit of a farm hack and is rough but trying to decide if its worth cleaning up. I noted the following issues and am wondering how much is involved in fixing, whether they are common items or signs of larger problems;

1 Oil leak from cam cover running down onto exhaust manifold and leaking around front edge

2 Wet power steering hoses and fluid residue around neck of reservior

3 oil leak from oil pan/sump

4 front valence - ms type badly broken and guard liners broken - the whole piece will need replacing

5 Tail pipe badly rusted with holes

6 Oil thin and dirty ( yes i know)

7 engine sounded good starting up but after a drive had what i would call a gentle knock from the bottom end. This surprised me as it is supposed to be a low mileage repower.

8 front windscreen seal is badly perished and crumbling

9 ASC light is on and the button is dead.

10 AC is Not working

Drives well except for a shimmy and has failed wof on a steering arm bush.

DIY labour rates would apply.

As a reference, there was a tidy looking nz new 98 or 99 528i done 177kms at the car fair last week for 4500ono. Leather etc, looked well looked after.

Sounds like a can of worms...

For a start the ASC light is probably a crook ABS module. Needs scanning/diagnosing

The engine knock/dirty oil is a worry.

PS reservior seepage leak - is common & runs dowm hoses. Not necessarily a problem.

AC - unknown, but could be costly.

Oil leaks - self explanitory.

Factor in replacement of suspension/thrust arm etc bushes/sway bar links.

Windscreen -is just a trim - the screen is glued in
