Stretched Automatic Shift cable?

Wondered if anyone here has experienced a stretched automatic gearshift cable resulting in a sloppy movement back and forth when selecting gears through the PRND432 selection of any model in that 1990-2000 year bracket?

I define 'sloppy' by about 5mm of play in either direction when the shifter is locked in a gear.

Curious as I believe mine has excess play (1993 e36) wondered if anyone else had experience it.

I think it uses a metal linkage like the E30 rather than a cable?
