front shock for 1987 318i sedan

I need some advice - i know nothing about cars sorry!

I have to replace the front shock on my bmw 1987 318i sedan, can someone tell me if i need 51mm or 45mm

i've found this auction on trademe and asked the guy, but he just told me to measure the strut and i dont know what he's on about (sorry!)

he wants you to measure the width of the strut tube,below the spring mount

nine times out of ten yours will be 45mm for a 318i

The shock slides inside the strut housing, which holds the shock and spring together. Jack the front up, turn the wheel out and you will see a spring at the top sitting on the strut, the shock is hiding inside this housing (as shown above).

As Jon said, being a 318i its probably 45mm.

now to try and find the right part - hopefully in Taranaki! :)

should be replaced in pairs
