E39 M5 clutch slippage

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I noticed a bit of clutch slippage yesterday after a decent blast down Kaipara Flats Road. I nursed her home and have been out for a brief drive this morning and can't feel anything (but haven't tried driving it hard just yet).

Once the clutches start slipping, is it a foregone conclusion that it needs replacing?

Also came out to a flat tyre this morning... Poor old girl's had a rough 24 hours.

Help much appreciated.

Yep. Sort it soon, otherwise you'll damage the flywheel. And that sucker is not cheap.

most likely will need a new flywheel as well.

as you cant machine the dual mass flywheels ,

so fit a new clutch and it will just start slipping again.

as the surface wont be dead flat and straight.

the dual mass units dont last forever as well the rubber between the to plates of steel wear out and the flywheel will flop around etc.

maybe look into one of the sleightly lighter solid mass flywheel and clutch packages etc.

some use stock clutch type , some use a sleightly beefier version (which is what the m5 really needs anyway)

been through all this...

It will slip again once the clutch is upto temp and you load enough torque on it.

luckily my flywheel was in reasonable condition as I got onto it as soon as it started slipping.

I went with a clutchmaster stage 1 clutch. It's not the easiest to use at low speed. But it's amazing the difference in the higher gears. (I get the traction control lighting up in 3rd & 4th)

there's plenty of choice now as to clutches & flywheel packages... just depends on your pockets.
