Fuel gauge stopped working - E36 318is MS

The fuel gauge stopped working on my GF's 1998 E36 318is MS. Any idea what it could be? Is this a common problem? I guess its the float but could be wrong.

Was going to say check the other wires while your at it. Did the wife's one a couple of months back and need to do the same again
