Alternator Compatability E36

Recommended Posts

I have a chance to get an 140A 320i (E36, 1994) alternator for cheap, would be nice to have as a spare if ti will fit directly on my 1997 318i (M44 engine). The look very similar though the 140A is bigger than the 90A and the 90A doesn't have a cooling duct like the 140A, but I figure it shouild be fine, if it will bolt up/fit...anybody know?

TIA

no

Perhaps you could expand on your reasoning for this answer. I found several forums which say it's not a problem.

Take a bit of reading to find the answer on this one.

Yes, you've hit on the crux of the problem, which I had overlooked. The mountings are qutie different between 4cyl and 6 cyl models. The top mount has a bolt and nut on the 4cyl, the 6cyl has a threaded hole in the mount.

Anybody want to buy a 140A alternator? :-( $75 and it's yours.
