PFL E30 320i Work log

Recommended Posts

Just thought I should start a thread to document the stuff i'm changing on my 320i and what needs to be done to it (that i know of).

Currently at 150km's roughly and have started with a few of the basics maintenance. Bought her from Dunedin and got it trucked up to Auckland. She's had 1 owner NZ New, but has been neglected the last few years as the owner was possibly too weak to maintain the car.

Interior is in great condition bar the tiny rip in the driver seat and a few stains. The Steering wheel has a rip but basically covered it with a normal steering cover until i replace it with an Mtech wheel.

Current to do (in no particular order):

- Fix oil leaks (seems to be all over)

- Replace control arms

- Gearbox mounts

- Replace right rear tail light (Small crack)

- New Floor mats

- Steam clean all seats and carpets

- Re-upholster driver seat/ all seats (depending on look and budget)

- Replace Brake pads/shoes & rotors

- Replace rear drum with discs (not sure if this is something I really want)

- Re-spray paint

- Fix rust spots in engine bay

- Re-chrome windshield and rear glass trim

- LSD (maybe)

What's been done:

- Replaced air filter - 149600

- Replaced Spark plugs -

- Distributor Cap - 150050

- Fuel Filter - 149960

- Distributor Rotor - 149900

- Transmission Fluid - 149500

- Hood Strut - 149900

- Fix Driver side Door lock - 19/11/2013

- Replace Cambelt + All other belts 150600- 88/12/2013

- Replace Waterpump 150600- 88/12/2013

- Oil Seals behind Cambelt - 150600- 8/12/2013

- 325i Exhaust Installed - 23/12/2013

- Replaced Driveshaft coupler/guibo - 151500 - 23/12/2013

- New Clutch (maybe when it's really needed) - 20/08/2014

- New Rear main seal - 20/08/2014

- New Head gasket - 20/08/2014

- New rocker cover gasket - 20/08/2014

- New Gear knob - 25/09/2014

- New Gear boot - 25/09/2014

- Replace suspension mounts - 30/12/2014

- New Suspension and Springs - KYB Gas shocks and H&R Sport springs - 30/12/2014

- Tie rod replacement (Both sides) - 30/12/2014

- Mtech 2 Steering Wheel - replaced it with SE 3 Spoke wheel as I've grown to like the style

- Differential fluid flush - 30/12/2014

- Valve Adjustment - 31/12/2014

- Master and Slave clutch cylinder - 31/12/2014

What's been added:

- 5.25 Rockford Fosgate speakers (Front and Rear) with tweeters

- 16" inch Alpina Wheels

- 14" inch Basket Weaves

- Z3 Short Shifter

Will add some photos soon. Progress will be slow as money is an object as always. What I really want is for this to be basically be back to what it once was from factory and maybe a little bit better.

Good stuff, pleased to see an absence of bastardisation on the to-do list. Same story with my 1984 320i; 1 owner, same ish KMs but less cared for the last bunch of years.

Thanks for replying Nath.

Here's a photo of her after my cleaning session the past weekend. Hopefully would do a re-spray in the future but for now, it still looks decent.

Also did a lock rebuild on the driver side, took me a while to finish it as it was quite hard to actually get it back onto the door itself but eventually got it going.

Only photo i took of the job (i need to get better at documenting these things).... (ignore the paper at the back as i had no other ones that i could use..)

Driver Lock rebuild

Tried a bit of cleaning on the driver door while it was out as well, small dab of degreaser (diluted) and a bit of rubbing cleaned it out a bit. Not sure if you can see it in the photos though:
BEFORE:

Driver Handle Clean - before

AFTER:

Driver Handle Clean - After

Hopefully getting an exhaust soon from one of the members here so i can replace my busted one....That will probably be the next update.

Small update:

Got my mechanic mate to change Cambelt and all other belts + water pump + a couple of oil seals that were leaking in that area.

Another update:

Replaced the broken/rusty/hole-full exhaust with an exhaust from a 325i with twin piping all the way through. Sounds and runs way better than before. Seems to have more kick on acceleration on all gears.

At the same time, replaced the driveshaft coupling/guibo as it was cracking already with new lock nuts as well.

New Muffler

Edit: added image of the new muffler, not sure if i have a photo of the old one.....

Drove it down to Rotorua on the holidays. Covered about 900KM and it seemed to run ok! Wasn't running as strong as it should so will definitely look at some sort tune up for the next few sessions that I can work on it.

Photo taken on a stop over.

Hmmm- what are you expecting it to go like? 320i E30s are pretty gutless I have found

I nice mod for a bit of up and go on the 320i is a lightened flywheel. not a huge difference but it gives it a bit more up and go ive found

I'll have a look at the flywheel mod. Thanks :)

I do agree that it's not the fastest thing in the world but I'm sure i've tried some other ones with more go... I definitely know there's something missing right now and it's not running at full. I hope I find it easily.

Haven't updated this for a while but a few things that I will add to OP as well:

New clutch, rear main seal, head gasket, rocker cover gasket, a few vacuum hoses, shift knob, leather shift boot and rear drum brake pistons (leaky old ones).

Not a lot of photos as I always forget to take some....

Hopefully will have some when it is in better condition.

Haha, only for a year or so as I began modding my E46.
