e30 engine conversion questions.

Recommended Posts

ok so ive been planning a 24v e30 for a while now.

slowly building up some parts.

i was always planning on getting a damaged e36 328i so i could strip all the running gear out and sell off any excess parts.

that would leave me with a m52b28.

well opportunity came knocking and ive ended up with a 1999 e46 328i.

difference being its the m52TUb28 engine.

i cant find to much online but does anyone know if being dual vanos will vastly change the electric side of things?

Also as a twist of fate i swung the story of how good of a car the e46 was to the girlfriend and instead of saying ok and leaving me to it, shes decided that she wants it as an upgrade to her car.

so who knows i may end up tracking down a new bumper and recomplying it but i would really like to see that engine on my bench.

yeap, if its an M52 still then you should be fine, if its an M54 will be a but trickier.

are you planning to run it as factory complete with EWS, or do a M50/OBD1 conversion?

if the latter, i have a complete E34 M50 here, its high km's so i don't think you will want to use the block (though it runs fine, its still in the car), but the sump, pickup, OBD1 conversion etc, is all there.

Let me know if you want it we can figure something out.

yea i was planning on getting the ecu reflashed to exclude ews and secondary o2 sensors etc.

just as long as i dont find the twin vanos has a million extra wires to the ecu i should be fine.

m52tu pretty much is an m54 more than an m52, as per the thread I linked;

The main reason is down to management, can bus and fly by wire mainly, there are people that know how to flash this out of the ECU but its still a big secret and as such they charge fortunes for it, £800 odd.
The other reason is the head/gas flow design, when they designed the engines they were not interested in them making more power, just reducing emissions, due to this the ports are much smaller and IMO give less scope for power increases.

I would stick to an m52b28, I know kerry on here did the m52tu, but went OBD1 and vanos delete to do so. So much trouble when you can just use an m52b28 as is.

Ok so the car turned up with one pedal less than advertised, this has moved me more towards the pulling the engine route rather than recompliance,
Just a note, it definantly has a cable throttle, so how would i find out if its using new or old computer technology
