740i_Lou 5 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 Just had my covers powder coated and wanting to get the mounting faces planed. Where would I take them? Do I need to go to an engine re-builders? I wouldn't think it was a major job and would take minimal time/effort. Could perhaps be done on a large belt sander? If there's anyone in Hamilton that can help me out here there's a box of Heineken with your name on it. Alternatively if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. *Glenn* 854 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 You can't correct them by resurfacing them if they are warped. New covers really at about $800 each or go second hand
740i_Lou 5 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 Why? Serious question. Have read it being done multiple times by users on other forums.
740i_Lou 5 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 Also, Not technically warped. Just wanting fresh, flat, pc free surfaces.
yng_750 247 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 bear in mind that the covers dont actually touch the head. i would flat edge it and only worry about it if it is more than 2- 3mm or so off plane
740i_Lou 5 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 One is mostly flat with a gap of maybe 1/10mm if laid flat on a table. The other is similar except for a slight crack on one of the mounting holes on the three front ones. Basically it has split enough that the cover rocks slightly on a flat surface. Again its not more than maybe 1-2mm out. The crack itself does not leak oil as it is on the outer edge. Just wanting a completely flat surface to eliminate the possibility of future leaks. yng_750 247 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 the gasket seats in.the bottom of the groove so planing the edge wont change how it sits. it will just expose more rubber. i think thats why it was said it cant be done. yoi would have to machine down the groove too. 740i_Lou 5 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 Ah I get ya. That didn't occur to me. As I say, the only real issue I have is with that crack. The grove around there is still in the same place but where the crack is on the side it has spread. Its kinda hard to explain so I'll through up some pictures tomorrow. aja540i 1906 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 The covers dont touch the heads so not much point really, as long as the gasket goes into the groove you should be ok.
