E36/E46 keys - remote locking

Recommended Posts

Guest Andrew

Just got my E36 and mums E46 -

The keys are this type -(attached crappy cell phone pics)

What usually stops the remote locking working - it sort of works - and the light goes on the keys. Battery?

and WTF does ASC do - tell me a 323 doesn't have traction control - or is it purely stability control.

Yeah probably battery, Its just gets really intermitent when its dying. Mine got so bad I had to hold the remote upto the window to get it to work.

As for ACS, just go do some testing.

Umm, if it's an E36 key and it doesn't have a chip then the likes of Mr Minut will do it ..

My freind used to cut the for me for something like $10 where as Mr Minut charges around $40 ...

pre-95 without EWS (immobiliser), you can do it anywhere

post-95 with EWS, BMW dealer. As the key need to be coded.

approx $150 for remote, approx $95 for non-remote

they need to be paid up-front and Couriered from Germany

should take 2 weeks.

I'm 99% sure that the keys with chips came out in 95' so you should be fine. Call up the $tealer, they'll be able to tell you for sure about the chip. If you do have the chip your looking at around $100 each key.

Does it work when near the centre mirror (that's where the sensor is)?

if yes, battery

if no, may need re-sync the key to the car

1. Lock and unlock the car with key from driver side door (within 5 sec)

2. Get in the car, close the door, turn key to ACC (position 1) then off

3. take the key out, point to the centre mirror

4. press and hold the lock (middle one) and press unlock 3 times while you hold that in.

5. if success, the door will lock and unlock itself to confirm

if not success, there's another way to do it at the dealers

Last time they did that for free, only take them 30 seconds.

ACS button actually represent "ACS+T", the "T" is traction control and ACS I think is more preventing understeer. DSC (in e46 and after) do more to prevent oversteer/slide. Don't quote me on this though, someone correct me if I am wrong.

its not a coded key, but its one of those double sided ones! mr. minut cant do it, asked there already, and its like $45 to get it done at a professional locksmith! I found an exact blank of the key at bunnings but they wouldnt sell it to me because they said it was a wrong order and that they couldnt cut it for me either, their machine couldnt do it!

ill ring up the dealer and see what they say, ill let u knw...

thnx
