Michael. 2313 Report post Posted November 6, 2017 Rebuilding the diff for my car this month. New seals, bearings and painted etc. Question I have regarding the rebuild, the original gear ring gear, center and pinion are being reused, so in theory would the factory adjusting shims for the side bearings and pinion bearings maintain the correct contact pattern and backlash? or..... is it not quite as simple as that? My understanding is the specs should be maintained, but when changing ring gear / pinions for a different ratio the shims adjusted to suit Any input would be appreciated. dirtydoogle 383 Report post Posted November 7, 2017 Get some poster paint, or contrasting paint to do your markings and print out a markings chart Can you find the factory spec for preloading? If so, easy peasy to check You also need a way to measure your preloading/breakaway toqrue 9/10 a bearing swap does not necessitate doing shims unless you have Chinese bearings
