treone 647 Report post Posted January 4, 2022 Great work. Just curious, what type of custom clutch and flywheel set up did you go with for both? And where did you source them? Reason for asking is i recently did a clutch in an e31 that is factory manual/m60’ Went from a DMF to a single flywheel setup and not quite happy with the amount of shudder it now has. cheers
e46v12 477 Report post Posted January 5, 2022 @treone I got a guy name Greg at MP Auto in Upper Hutt. We used a M62 auto ring gear, then a custom machined steel flywheel which he custom dowel to allow a nissan pressure and clutch to be able to be mated. The centre of the clutch disc had been swapped out for a bmw one. But Unfortunately the only way to get rid of your shudder would be to go back to duel mass again. You could minimise the amount by putting some thicker gearbox oil in. Get your clutch disc and pressure plate to have some sort of damping springs in them. But after all that you may still have shudder. Hope thats helps you or go in and talk to Greg, hes a real nice guy and really helpfull.
treone 647 Report post Posted January 6, 2022 Thanks @e46v12! appreciate the tip - will look into changing to a thicker oil Will live with the shudder for now, but plan to revert back to DMF at some point. Interestingly, the original clutch went to MP Auto and i had several conversations with Greg as I’m localish. They diagnosed buggered flywheel, but couldn’t source a direct replacement. i had to go with a single due to not easily finding one (locally or overseas) and bmw wanting $5k for a full setup - ouch! Plus i had to get it mobile and off my mechanics lift. Always look forward to your updates - admire your knowledge and skills - awesome stuff! 😁
e46v12 477 Report post Posted January 6, 2022 (edited) @treone you could get a later model setup from a e39 m5. I normally order from FCP euro in the States. This will bolt up to your motor and box. m60 and m62 share same flywheel bolt pattern and use the same gearbox too. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-clutch-flywheel-m5-21212229190#fitment https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-clutch-kit-m5-z8-e39-e52-k70282-01 Edited January 6, 2022 by e46v12
treone 647 Report post Posted January 6, 2022 Thanks again @e46v12 I wasn't 100% sure about compatibility between m60 and m62, Google can be confusing most times 😀. As kindly confirmed by yourself, I will use this set-up for my other e31 then get a second set later on to revert my other one back to DMF. A costly exercise but two sets for less than one genuine kit is a bargain - that's fun of having twin classic BMW's haha. Appreciated once again, cheers!

For a 6 speed box?

For a 6 speed box? Correct - mated to 6-speed box. Never thought of this but could be a possibilty. It probably won't be for a little while though, as I have other priorities at the moment and as I accumulate the replacement parts. Probably best to PM for details etc. Cheers

Not much left to do other than fit the Mtech bumpers i have repaired and painted, Redo the hood lining, Go for cert get WOf and rego then its good to go. Also big plans for the X5 4.6is manual, Ive decided to use the v12 manual that was for another project, I will be swapping it in the X5 and twin turbo it. Once the wagon is finished i can crack onto the new swap. Thanks Team
