e46 exhaust part

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know whether this is a muffler/ resonator/ cat converter? Muffler shop told me it was a cat converter but reading around different forums, they suggested it was the first resonator.

Parts #2 and #3 in the photo attached.

IIRC its a resonator. Cats are #2 and #3 in the diagrams and usually have O2 sensors on either side of them.

E: oh, you didnt mean the highlighted #1.

They are likely a secondary set of cats, the primary ones are integrated into exhaust manifold. Depending on your emission standard you may or may not have post cat O2 sensors after the primary cats. Doubt you will achieve much by deleting them, maybe a slight change in exhaust tone for better or worse.
