You should double check the AFM...I had issues with mine doing somethign similar, along with reduced power, and bad fuel consumption, and white smoke when accelerating hard - switched over to a different AFM and all problems instantly resolved, even though my old one looked perfectly fine.

I'd suggest trying that...

Also before I crashed my car, I bought a brand new fuel pump and filter from BMW - that changed my start time from 5 - 6 cranks to 1 - 2 from cold. Could be something similar?

With the fuel smell present, it sounds like you may have sticky injector/s. Get a bottle of injector cleaner and put it in the tank and see if there is any improvement.

I have a f/l 320 at the moment that battles to start but runs reasonably ok once it has. I have diagnosed it down to the fuel pump but havn't put a new one in yet. Get your fuel pressures checked...
