F3X 4 Cylinders - are they still rubbish?

Recommended Posts

Curious to see thoughts and experiences - looking for a potential replacement for mums 525i E39. The 328i etc range F31s seem pretty decent value but I come from a general distrust of any BMW 4 cylinder that doesn't start with an M.

Would prefer late N55/B48/58 but they seem fairly uncommon especially in wagon and a reasonable price/not stage 15+

I'd want to upgrade to a 540i E39 as that's more my era but I understand the appeal. My issue is that as soon as it hits 20k an E92 M3 is not far off....

We happen to have had a few B48's come in recently - cracks in the plastic oil filter housing and coolant leak of some sorts. IMO the more plastic parts you have coupled with extra heat from the turbo makes things more inconsistent when you factor in running conditions and heat cycles etc. Proper servicing combined with mostly hot open road driving from new or lower mileage certainly reduces the rate of parts failures though, ive come across a few rare N series engines with 250-300,000km that had minimal engine work done.
