Best solution IMO is to format and load a new version of windows back on.

Then avoid IE and Outlook (express incl.) and use 3rd party software such as mozilla etc.

I've found Norton AV can sometimes be useless.

Best protection is vigilance - you wouldn't have unprotected sex with a foreign sex slave would you?

Go into Tools, Then Internet options , And Delete all the Cookies & Offline Files First [This has worked for me before]

Do a System restore to a Earlier Date as well

Run the cleaning programs a couple more times, Lavasoft Adaware and Spybot-search and destroy, are the best. Make sure they are up to date with their definitions, they'll get it in the end normally. Good luck.

Formatt - re install windose.

Install a good Linux distro on a partition.

Use Linux for all webbin, and windose for gaming and essential software you must use for business etc.

Spybot, adaware, antivirus and a GOOD firewall along with Peerguardian2 in windose will see you right.

Linux is so retarded for a home user it's not even funny.

I totally agree.

Makes for a good secure server especially when it's the only exposed pc in a network setup but that's about it and having a dual boot pc is such a PITA it's not worth the time and effort.

As I said before, have a clean windows with all security updates, and just use Mozilla instead of explorer and outlook. Then be vigilant with what you download and run.

E: I've only ever had one pc virus in my life and that was back in summer 96 when the internet was unknown, Xtra had a text only home page, my top model modem was 33k, I had an ICQ number that was only 6 digits, and viruses were in their infancy.

Since that i've never had one - more over because i've always tried to stay away from MS products.

While on the subject, anyone ever seen the cascade virus on a DOS machine?

Ive been on the web as long as that Carl and have always used Micro$oft products and have also never had a virus.

Its arguable that you are more risk having ms products simply because they are more in use. For example the last time I ran a website only 1% of hits where from Apples, why would someone want to write a virus for 1% if the web popultion.

As long as you are careful, use all of the products that have already been mentioned you should have no trouble whatsoever.

Ive just picked up a second hand pc for my mum and although its a clean install Im scanning it now and already finding tracking cookies.

Ah yes, and set your cookie settings to be only allowed by trusted sites:

In IE you can set trusted sties, set everything else to untrusted

In firefox you can add exceptions to allow only certain sites to be trusted

I think the debate on why Apple has greater security is more complex than just (it's not much of a target) BSD has inherant greater security in the way user privlidges are set up.

The beta versions of Vista also have this - but it is SO annoying its hard to comprehend (You have to enter user passwords to remove SHORTCUTS(!) for programs you have just installed).

I'm a Linux/Windoze user and have never had a Windows spyware/virus problem. Ever.

And FYI - this is the amount of users using Mac (who use this website)

Windows 1114392 94.7 %

Macintosh 39524 3.3 %

They have crept up to 3.3 % - good work Steve!

Andy I couldnt agree more with the argument being more complex. I was just looking for an example about how dominant MS is on home pc's.

What gets on my tits is people saying that you will get a virus unless you remove all MS products from your machine. I hate MS as much as the next person but its just bollox to think will get a virus just because you use MS products.

There are alot of email worms that specifically target Outlook while not entirely affecting other 3rd party email programs, however, the main reason people get viruses is because they're quite ignorant and/or naive.

let me see, who's this email from, it says "I love you" so it must be from someone I know...click...boom, headshot

Any chance of seeing what the break down of browsers are?

Guest Andrew

sure - interesting to see how firefox has stolen nearly 17% of the market. Stats from 3 years ago show a 95% I.E share.

MS Internet Explorer 77.6 %

Firefox No 16.6 %

Safari 2.1 %

Unknown ? 1.7 %

Opera 1.1 %

Mozilla 0.4 %

Netscape 0.1 %

Digging up an old thread here, but who's using which anti-virus program and what's your thoughts on them?

Norton

McAfee

AVG free

AVAST

Kaspersky

Other...

I'm finding Norton is killing my Steam connectivity and I have to stop all it's services just to get Steam to connect to the servers. I'm hearing good things about AVG free for home use.

Thoughts Tane?

Andy, what's the break down now?
