E30-323ti 66 Report post Posted July 26, 2006 Hahaha Tin Arsed Luck it is!!! So you guys rekon I should put the centre from this e28 Lsd into my e30 320i factory diff or just change the flange's and back cover and put the whole thing in? As long as you are sure the 3.07 is a medium, then the centres will swap to the 3.64 medium. You will need to get a diff shop to reset the preload on the side bearings & pinnion depth if you don't have the know-how and tools. ...probably get 40mpg though! until he reaches a hill or a stiff head wind!! Just to give you an idea, it would be doing ~2200rpm at 100kph in 5th.
kerrynzl 3 Report post Posted July 26, 2006 If you are swapping just the carrier you shouldn't need to touch the pinion at all [you will need to check the backlash on the crown wheel] I've done lots of carrier swaps on 'crappy' Borg Warner diffs [Falcon, Valiant Etc] most carriers had the same tolerances [it's the C & P that needs to be matched] so as long as the C & P stay with their respective housing there wasn't a problem. I assume BMW tolerances are better.[borg Warners used shims, not crush sleeves] Measure the lash with a feeler guage ,then swap carriers, then measure again [Have a go]
jeremyb 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2006 How hard to come by are LSD centres for an E36 compact diff? I assume the M spec ones come with one...
StylesM5 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2006 it's always funny....i sold mine for $650 a while back....it was well advertised on here and trademe....yet no one actually buys it when it comes available. but yeah..having one is good, e30s kinda need them, unless you got super sticky rubber and big too I wish you'd left it in the car!!! conrod 1 Report post Posted August 11, 2006 (edited) How hard to come by are LSD centres for an E36 compact diff? I assume the M spec ones come with one...Same as an E30 diff or Z3 diff, so just find one of these in LSD, it will bolt straight in.And I don't think the M Spec compacts had them,as well as the fact that everyone seems to think their compact is an M Spec because it has the "M" badge on the back, even with an M43 Auto up front! Here is two on trademe.http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=66055111 Edited August 11, 2006 by conrod
