Legality/Considerations for a Raffle Sale of a Car?

Recommended Posts

So i was thinking,

Whats the legality of going out and selling say 1500 raffle tickets at $10 ea and then raffling off my car and a full tank of gas?

Im sure i could find enough mates and BMW Enthusiests to pull it off...

Heck i'd buy 10 tickets ;)

Okay the last bit probably is illegal lol.

Not sure of the legality, but I find it hard enough to sell $10 Coastguard raffle tickets when the money goes to a good cause, and the prize is a brand new Ford explorer and boat package valued at $200k, and second and third prizes also vehicle/boat packages.

You run the risk of not selling enough tickes, but still are obligated to do the draw and give your car away.

Novel idea though - I like it.

i think you have to clear with the dept of justice and the draw has to be supervised in some way to ensure you dont pull out your own ticket....Its a tough market isnt it.I would love to have a 540,but I wont get f.... all for my 535(essentially the same as yours) and then shell out another 6 to 8 thousand for the two cylinders and an extra forward gear.

Not without breaking the law;

Lotteries – for example raffles, sweepstakes

You do not require a licence if:

total value of prizes for a session is $5,000 or less, and

turnover of the gambling is $25,000 or less.

These may be run as either class 1 gambling or class 2 gambling.

If the total value of prizes is more than $5000 your group must be a society and it will require a licence. Find out how to obtain a licence.

You will need to comply with the lottery game rules.

See also the list of prizes which are prohibited and rules around what gambling proceeds can be used for.
