M52 vanos question ...

Recommended Posts

Why, is yours rattling? Unplug the vanos solenoid first [that disconnects it]

to remove it ,you will need a non-vanos intake cam & cam sprocket [longer duration]

The short duration vanos-cam locked would be so gutless it wouldn't pull the skin off a rice-pudding!

If its e36 m52 it should be on/off vanos, easy to run.

If its e46 m52 its variable.

Get a non-vanos intake cam & sprocket and front timing cover, and get rid of the vanos completely

[someone will buy the vanos unit off you]

There are plenty of cooked heads around with good cams in them

NO, only M50's and newer.

BMW created Vanos to get good top-end power without too much cam duration, and also get good bottom-end power at the same time

with long duration cams a lot of cylinder pressure is lost during 'valve overlap' [a big cause of unburnt hydrocarbons/smog] plus the long duration cam wont idle as good or produce bottom-end power

with vanos you can use a shorter duration cam for Idle/Smog/Bottom-end reasons and alter the lobe separation to recover at the top-end

Kerry heres a question for you.

Aparently the vanos works in the off position at idle , the on position mid range and the off position top end.

Make sense to you???
