  1. In a fortunate turn of events, both Dogballs and I got the bits we wanted from SJ's set of F series big blues for sale.

I've done brakes plenty of times but this will actually be the first time I've swapped calipers out, so I have some questions about the bleed / refill process as I've heard the brembos can be a pain to bleed completely.

I'll only be running the fronts as the rears on an E90 are firmly in the way too hard basket - that or spending moonbeams on having the calipers converted to axial mount. Some quick maths on piston sizing shows that braking bias won't be affected very much, the difference being 10,202mm^2 stock compared to 10,048mm^2 for the new blues, which is a 0.4% shift in brake bias to the rear.

    1) Check the bleed nipples firstly - I've heard they are prone to seizing - are these an off the shelf / generic item if I need to replace?

    2) Bleeding calipers from empty - I guess the process is the same as bleeding but will obviously take longer to fully clean the system out?

    3) The E90's that could be retrofitted with the 6/2piston BMW Performance yellows also had coding added to the VO as "+SPBR" - is this necessary at all?

    4) Bleed the outer side of the calipers before the inner side?

    Many thanks!

Hi Neil is this still available?

Yep, but struggling to find the right F31 320dX I'd need to replace it with... That or an M235i because sensible winter car.

  3. I've been very interested (multiple excel spreadsheets interested) in diff and gearbox ratio tuning after the Mine's R34 GTR was found to be using GTST diffs, but won't get into the weeds here...

...Surely the 3.64 is the least desirable ratio when compared to the 3.73 and 3.91? And at $2k aren't you looking at an off the shelf OS Giken or similar slipper which means you get to choose whatever crown wheel you'd like?

No one is dailying these anymore and the pool of buyers for a 50k + weekend car is pretty small.

Yep... The next glut of E30 M3's to market will be estate sales...

There could be an argument to be made for market saturation, where everyone who had their rose tinted nostalgia goggles on has already gone out and imported an M3. Case in point - there's some 30% more M3's in NZ than there are MT2's now...

Looking at it objectively: colour / interior / period correct mods will all factor into a potential purchasers decision making process, and that's even before you get into the weeds about US spec / Japan CR/OD gearbox spec etc etc. If you've got that much money to spend then you can also probably afford to wait for the spec you want to come up for sale. And for those sorts of buyers, RHD is a no-no word. Suspect there is also a fair few off books transactions taking place, so true market pricing might be slightly different to what people are asking.

  5. I think the metric here: what did the nz new black "bitsa" go for, and how much money and time would it take to get to the standard here?

I personally can't stand mph speedos, so I can understand the swap, but why not just swap the gauge face itself if you're going to that length? The hardest part is lining up the needle correctly on the spindle when putting it back on.
