  1. "Forgive him Father for the sin(s) of bastardising what will become one of BMW's land-mark cars in the immediate future."

Yeah, Martyn I will get you that list of mechanical tweaks, far better spending your hard earned money on them "for you to know and others to find out."

  2. hi there rebuilding a m42 engine before putting into my e30 and would like to know what sort of power i can see and get a good idea of what i will need to do (any rough costs would also be good)

i want rw180hp and dont want to bore it out any help or advice would be much appreciated cheers

Check-out Total BMW mag Ap 07 issue 79 and Jan 08#88. Spend most of your money on the chassis improvements and save your money for an M3 I would be doing at this stage I reckon.

  3. do you mean ews, this car had a non ews system, i know that m44 engines have that

Which year e36 318is did it come out of?

Yeah we've just gone the other way with a 97 316 EWS changing to 1994 (able to get a cheap one same kms as the old seized 316) which was non EWS and with a mod to the EWS it fired up first time and goes really well.

Andrew Everrett from Total BMW magazine would be worthwhile to email to ask a qn in TBMW. Need to quote numbers and years to define engine spec though.

Most e30 Bmw enthusiasts have his book"BMW e30- 3 Series Restoration Bible" which has some comments and sets it all out as to pre 96 e36 m42, m44 things you will have to overcome. Saw one on TM recently for $50 from memory. Google where you can get one.

  4. There is a black one in parnell with a stoved in rear 3/4 panel on the drivers side.

I remember a lazur blue one down in wellington also, but it had unibody rust.

There is also a red one that parks everyday down beside foodtown in town.

There's a black one and a red one Palm Nth way.

I have an engine from from an e30 318is wrecked in ChCh, It has the e30 engine mounts on it.

How many now can we say that can be considered as now "accounted" for then?

  5. I guess it is asking e30 318is owner's to put their hands up who are on BS.

I don't have pics to put up at the moment but have a red one, a black one and an engine & g/box. X ChCh. He was putting another engine in and strickly speaking rendering it a hybrid so would no longer comply with factory engine/car configuration albeit even though a rolling chassis still exists roaming around ChCh.

  6. Thanks

I know of around 5 on here and imagine there are a couple more, would be keen to find out who has them now though

    Question:

Was looking at the car side on and with the red lip it(to me) makes it look a bit lop sided/front heavy, you get my drift. Anyway i was thinking should i:

A: Paint the black side and bumper bits red

B: Try and find Tech I/II sides and rear and paint them red

C: Or just leave it as is?

  7. Came out of a crunched right mudguard 1984 m323i.

Was for fitting to a e30 320i with overheating problem and suspected head had gone.

Just needed new gasket so engine has been sat in our garage nearly 2 years now.Need to clear space in garage to get a car in again.

Cheapest way for a 318i or 320i owner to gain extra 20-35 torque & bhp (approx) of grunt.

Had clocked 144,something kms when removed.

Has all the pieces to make it go included in the sale. I think the radiator hoses are there too.

So you won't have to pay another $300 for the pieces to make it go like most for sale these days.

Could help with delivery P/Nth-Akld 19-21 Sept. ph 06 3288 657 best after 6.30pm away 1-5 Sept though.

  8. where do i find a mint b25? I have been looking on trademe and there dont seem to be any b25 on there and hasint been in the last few weeks of looking. Whats a good gearbox to put behind the b25? currently my cars only running a 4 speed witch i find ok but seeing as the last 5 speed e30 i drove was more then 4 years ago i cant remeber well enough to notice a big difference. would the 5 speed make a big difference?

Was just looking on www.drivenperformance.co.nz and they have a mint turbo manifold...seems to be the route i will take having much experence with turbo engines.

Hey, check if you don't have a dogleg, 1st maybe hard to engage( straight down from reverse) with wear and tear.

323i had either 245 GF or dogleg GJ as standard.

  9. Hey all. I have heard from a guy with lots of bmws (including a black 2 door e30 with a turbo 4age....very nice) that the head off a 320 e30 will fit the 323 and the 325 witch I don’t doubt but he also says that it has more aggressive cams or some kind of performance advantage. I have a matt black 323i with adjustable suspension so it’s kind of sorted in the handling department so looking at some extra performance (on a budget) now. Any help would b appreciated.

    Thanks, Tom

-the e12/e21 cam for 320 & 323 has a 260 duration cam fitted compared to the e30 325 252 duration, possibly 4-5bhp gain and power all the way therough for a low cost

-the 731 320 head with the 525e bottom end is another choice to a 2.7

-most accidents seem to be caused by being unable to stop in time, I am told, so improving that to suit more power could be first call on the improvement budget.

How could e28 brakes be incorporated into an e30 braking system, is it an option BSers?

  10. Hi David,

How is your 2.7 'screamer' going ?

    Cheers

    Martyn

    Hi Martyn

At the moment down-sizing number of vehicles , moving house and chasing second hand internals for an F3-201 Hewland gearbox project. Got most of the parts for the 2.7 screamer just some time and money needed to progress.

probably will end up next years resolution.

    Cheers

    Davidp

  11. I had around 550 hits in a week and loads of questions, so I took it off for my own sanity. The more serious guys who were interested have all my contact details if they want to get in touch.

In the meantime, I'm going to take the sheets off it and start to use it more, whilst I save for that full respray. It's a great car to drive and I don't want it falling into the wrong hands :)

Oh dear... I think I've become attached to my car!

I have a couple of them, (NZers) and have a need to sell one very soon too. Sad thoughts.Trying to decide which one,the Black one (coming up 160) or the red one (120kms 119 now). Hoping some collector will buy and treasure it as its previous owners have and preserve it for posterity perhaps. Was interested in whether you have sold. Same sentiments as you, just rego'ed the red one and appreciate its driving character and frugal petrol compared to the m325i. Seems prices for say a decent e30 m325i make the e30 318is a dwarf by comparison, whose qualities are definitely underestimated and underrated by their scarcity in the market I suppose.

How many would be still running here be in NZ?

I have the engine and gearbox of one from a damaged one and with yours that's 5. Shelly's seemed to have brought many if not most most in. I was told 20 altogether came to NZ. AnMTech11 model one does not get mention in the factory Literature of the model.

  12. My wife presented me with the problem of the boot locking barrel jammed in the locked position.

Puffed some graphite lock powder stuff and tried using the key to pull it back out without breaking the key, but to no avail. (Before this the boot was the only way to central lock and unlock the car.) Tried thumping the barrel with a piece of firewood with the axe head, then tried key again and "Hey, Presto,Click."

Now she thinks I have the technical "nowse" to fix the central locking! I am throwing out the BMW tool-kit and replacing it with an "axe-kit. Now I need to know where do I aim the axe blade to fix the central locking problem?

  13. apparintly its only about 8.something:1 with the 2.7 pistons because they dont match the head. your right about the injectors they lean out at about 180hp

Yeah, picked up a 324d engine a couple of months for steel crank to use in a 2.7 screamer. The 525e crank doesn't want to go past 6000rpm.

another budget consideration is to use a 323i camshaft over the std 325i, forgotten exactly think nearly 260- degree as opposed to ?250-degree 325i, acheap mod if you already have an engine to pluck conrods from pluck the camshaft too.

Andrew Everett's (An Editor TBMW) BMW e30-3 Series Restoration BiBle is a great resource for all budding e30 owners and has a bit to say about 2.7 upgrades.
